UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLSWORTII A. HAWTHORNE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HAWTHORNE AND SHEBLE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA,
PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
DISK-RECORD-FILING CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLswoR'rn A. Haw- THORNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Disk- Record-Filing Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists, primarily, of an adaptation of the book-case unit system to cabinets for the storage of the disk records of talking machines, the invention comprising the combination of a unit case with a plurality of specially constructed sub-units, whereby I secure not only the advantages of ready adjustment of storage capacity to suit the amount of stock on hand, which is a characteristic of the book-case unit system, but I also provide for the convenient and orderly disposition of the various records, for the ready accessibility of the same, and
for the quick and accurate distribution of fresh additions to the stock, thereby insuring economy of tune and labor not only 111 distrlbutlng new stock, but also in filling the 1 orders of purchasers.
unit casing which isof rectangular form and is open at the front, this casing being of any desired length, depending upon the number of sub-units 2 which it is intended to receive. Each of these sub-units consists of a box or casing with high back 3, low front 4, and sides 5 with inclined or beveled front edges, each of these sub-units also having a false front 6 some distance in the rear of the main front 4, and, by preference, slightly higher 5 than the same, said false front being backed by an inclined strip. 7, so that it presents a triangularcross section; in the inner face of the back 3 of each subsection, at the top of the same, are formed shallow verticalgrooves or notches, J, and in the members (3 and 7 of the false front there are, by preference, corresponding grooves or notches 10,
the two set .of grooves or notches receiving and laterally confining the opposite ends of a series of partition strips 12, whereby each sub-unit is divided into a plurality of spaces for the reception of the disk records, each of the partition strips 12, however, being readily detachable, whereby the width of any storage space for the disks can be readily varied to suit the number of disks of any one kind which may be in stock.
Owing to the inclined front edges of the side walls of the sub-units and to the inclined disposition of the partition strips therein, the circular disk records deposited in the spaces between the partitions project forwardly beyond said partitions and beyond the sides of the sub-units, and can, therefore, be readily placed in position or withdrawn, while the provision of the main and false fronts 4 and 6, spaced apart from each other, produces a linger space 13 between them, whereby either sub-unit can be readily grasped and'pulled outwardly from or pushed back into its sition in the main unit even though all 0 the spaces of said sub-unit are filled with records.
I claim 1. In a disk record filing cabinet the com-- bination of a main unit with a plurality of sub-units fitted therein, side by side, but independently removable therefrom and each constructed for the-reception of a plurality of records, and having a main front and a false front in the rear of the same, providil'ig a fingcr space between them.
2. A sub-unit for a disk record filing cabinot, having a main front and a false front in the roar of the same, providing a finger space between them.
3. A sub-unit for a disk record ,iiling cabinct, said sub unit having a back member with vertical gr'ooves or notches therein, a front member of triangular cross section, and correspomlingly notched or grooved, inclined partition stripsdiaving opposite ends adapted to said notches, and a main front in front of said front member, providing a finger space between the same.
ln testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
