be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sound reproducing .machines and more particularly-to those of the portable type, in which the sound arm, reproducer, and record table are removed and stored within the main cabinet or box of the machine to' be readily carried from place to place.' The present application forms a continuation in art of my pending U'. S. application, erial No. 397,185, filed'July 19, 1920.
One object of the invention is to provide a unique form of case or cabinet containing the horn and motor, provided with a door equipped in one side with means for carrying the record table, tone arm, reproducer, crank, etc., when their use is not'necessary, the construction being such that closing-of the door will move these parts into the cabinet. 7
Another aim of the invention is to prothe box, which is normally swung to a carrying position above the upper side thereof and located over the driving spindle 'for the record table, said handle however, being capable of swingin downwardly to one side.
of the box or cabinet so as to be entirely out of the way when the record table is to be applied to the spindle.
A further object of the invention is to provide for normally closing the discharge end of the horn by a doorwhich can be swung downwardly and then moved into the case beneath the horn.
With the foregoing and minor objects in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 1s a perspective View of a portable phonograph constructed inaccordance with the present invention, showing the- Figure 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating the instrument in condition for use.
. Figure 3 is a side elevation with the door swung open to expose'the record table and other parts normally carried in the box or cabinet. V
Figure 4 is a horizontal section as indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 5. v
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view.
In the drawings above briefly described,
the numeral 1 designates a rectangular cabinet or case of the general shape of an ordinary suit case, one side of said case be ing provided with an outwardly swinging door 2, whileone end of said case is equipped with a door 3 having a pintle 4 slidable in a groove 4 in one'side of the case 1, so that by swinging said door downwardly, it may slide. into the box, as in Figs. 2 and 3. A horn -5\ is located in the case 1 with its 'discharge end normally closed by the door 3, said horn being spaced inwardly from the door 2v and having its'inner end in communication with an opening 6 formed in the the same cross sectional area as those now commonly used.
The central portion of the top 7 carries a spring motor 12 provided with a spindle 13 rising through said top for drivi-ng a record table 14. The usual hand crank 15 is provided for Winding the motor 12 and this crank, together with the record table 14, the tone arm 9 and the reproducer 10, may all be housed in the case 1 when the instrument is to be carried from one place to another. I preferably provide a box 16 on the inner side of door. 2 and movable into the case 1, below the horn 5, to containthe reproducer,-the crank and the tone arm.
' For holding the record table 14 Within the case 1 I preferably provide the construction shown most clearly in Fig. 3. A pair of cleats 17 are secured to the inner side of the door 2 and extend vertically across the same, the lower ends of said cleats being connected by a board. 18 to form therewith K but allowsthecrank 15, the tone arm 9 and the reproducer 10 to' be conveniently removed from the box 16. I
Atmotor control 19 and a release 20 for the latch of door 2 preferably extend through the horn 5 as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5. v w
In order that thecase and its contents may be easily carried, it provide a novel form of handle which is normally positioned above the top 7, but may 'be folded downwardly to an out of the way position when the table 14 is to be applied to the spindle 13. In the present showing, the handle includes a U-shaped spring metal bail 22' whose arms 23 are laterally bent in the same direction at 24, between their ends, being provided at their terminals with eyes 25. A leather or other suitable hand grip 26,
which may wellibe an ordinary suit case handle is connected with the eyes 25. The arm-connecting portion of the bail 22-is pivoted upon the top? of the case 1 by appropriate bearings 27 and when the handle is in case-carrying position as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, the portions, of the arms 23 contiguous to said arm-connecting portion, rest upon said top 7, while the laterally bent.
arm ends extend upwardly from said top. To hold the bail in this position, oppositely facing hooks or keepers 28 are secured to the top 7 and in orderto engage the arms 23 with these keeper's, it isnecessary to spring said arms outwardly to some extent.
When they are once hooked into the keepers, however, and the weight of the entire device is lifted by the' hand grip. 26, this exerts. an inward pull on the arms '23 thereby efiectively retains them in the keepers. When the table 14 is to be used, the entire handle is disengaged from the hooks or keepers 28 and swung downwardly -outwardly facing hooks carried by the top to'thepo'sition seen in Fig." 2,1in which position, the lateral ends 24 of the arms 23 and 4 the hand grip 2ti 'lie at one side' ot the the. invention, and since probably the be t From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and compact arrangement for carrying out the objects of results may be obtained from the details disclosed, they are by preference followed. I wish it understood, however, that Withinthe scope of-the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim:
1. A portable graphophone comprising a casing having an outwardly swinging door occupying the major portion of one of its vertical sides, a horn within the casing spaced inwardly from said door, and means for mounting a record table upon the inner side of said; door 'When it is not in use, whereby, to position said record table between said door and horn when the former is closed. I
' 2. .Aportable graphoplione comprising a rectangular case having an outwardly swinging door occupying the major part of one of its sides, a born within said case spaced from a side thereof adjacent said door, said ,horn being adapted for communication witha tonearm, and a box carried by the inner side of said door said box being movable into the case'into the space between said horn and the second mentioned side of the case,,being.j adapted to contain the tone arm and other accessories.
3. The combination with va graphophone case, of a U-shaped spring metal bail pivotally mounted upon said base and having its ends connected by a handle, said bail being movable uponits pivotal axis to an inoperative position, and a pair of outwardly facing hooks carried by the top of the case and adapted to ,engage the arms of said bail to hold the latte-r in carrying position, the inward pull exerted on the arms of the bail by the handle, serving to retain said arms within said hooks.
4. The combination with a graphophone case,"of a U-shaped bail whose arm-connecting portion extends horizontally along the I *cas'ing top, bearings extending over said arm-connecting portion of the bail and pivoting" the latter to the top of the case, the
portions of the bail arms adjacent said arm- 1 connecting pgrtion being adapted to nor? mally rest upon the top of said case, the free end-p0rti0ns of said-.armsbeing bent upwardly and connected by a handle, and
of the case and normally engaging the inner portions of the bail arms to hold the latter 1 JOHN nnrnn.
