Description

UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD w. MAEDLER, on roar LEE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'ro DANIEL r.
"BERGHEIMER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
canmn'r.
I Application filed April 2,
To all who-m it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Lee, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in phonograph cabinets, and aims to provide a cabinet which is combined with a table for use where economy of space is necessary and to provide an article of furniture of neat and attractive appearance.
Another object, of the invention is the provision of a phonograph cabinet in which the instrument is normally housed within an inclosure or compartment constructed in connection with the table, the instrument being normally concealed and mounted for sliding movement, to permit of positioning the record and to permit access to a record compartment also provided in the inclosure.
-A further object of the invention is the provision of means for permitting the escape of the sound through a horn, which is directed outward through'one end of the cabinet, escaping, through the end of the inclosure, producing a rich tone quality.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear-as the following description is read in connectionwith the accompanying drawings,
. In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective viewv of a. combined table and phonograph cabinet, showing the, same in closed position.
Fig. 2-is an end view of the cabinet partly broken away. 4,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional .view of the cabinet taken longitudinally of an instrument drawer.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation in section with the drawer extended for the application of a record or ,winding the spring of the instrument.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts. the invention comprises ends 15 of a transversely slidable drawer Specification of Letters Patent.
W. MAEDLER,
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
1920. Serial No. 370,732.
16. This drawer is capable of being opened, from either side of the table for a mode termined distance. This distance is limited by stops 17, which contact with a stationary portion of the panels 12 and 13, but are capable of movement so as to permit of the withdrawal of the drawer when necessary or desirous. The panels and drawer just described provide an inclosure or cablnet for housing a phonograph and for this purpose, the drawer 16 is divided by means of a partition 18 into separate compartments 19 and 20. The compartment 19 is for the purpose of receiving a phonograph instrument 21, the depth of the drawer being greater than the height of the instrument, so that the latter will be contained wholly within the drawer to prevent damage and permit the drawer to close. For the purpose of adjusting and removing a record, one side of the drawer is cut away as indi cated at 22, this cut away portion also permitting of securing and removing the usual needle points.
The drawer is further provided upon this side with an opening 23 and when in closed position, this opening will register with an opening24, which is located in the small end of a horn" 25. This horn is located within the cabinet and extends from the side of the drawer outward toward the end wall 14, the sound escaping through the scroll work at this end of the cabinet. An additional opening 26 is provided in the side of the drawer through which the end of the crank arm 27 extends for the purpose of winding the spring, of the instrument, this crank armbeing removable to permit the drawer to close.
The compartment 20 which is provided 1n the drawer is designed to receive records for use in connection with the instrument and the'side of the drawer is cut away as indicated at 28 for convenience in removing the record.
In addition to the record space prov ded in the'drawer, that portion of the cabinet through which the horn 25 extends. is provided upon each side of the horn wlth a hinged compartment 29, which is closed by a panel 30. the latter being hinged along its bottom edge and capable of being swung outward to permit of the removal and in- -sertion of the records.
In the use of the invention, the drawer is pulled out at one end the distance being relfillated by one of the stops 17, which is s cient to 'ermit a record to be placed in claims.
position. T e spring may bethen wound and the drawer closed, the sound from the instrument striking the undersurface of the tails of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as roperly fall within the scope of the g a pended Having thus described my invention what I. claim as new is 1. The combination with-a table having an. inclosure beneath the top, of a drawer slidably mounted in said inclosure, and capable of being opened from either end, a
partition dividing the drawer into a phonograph compartment and a record com artment, said drawer being of greater epth than the height of the phonograph to protect the latter andfhaving one side wall of each compartment cut away to facilitate the removal of the records from the record compartment and the application and removal of the records from the phonograph, and a sound exit located atone side of the drawer. T
2. The combination with a table havin a compartment located beneath the top, 0 a
drawer slidably mounted in said compartment and said drawer having an opening in one side wall r a phonograph within the drawer and a horn located within the compartment with the small end of the horn registerin with the opening in the drawer when the atter is'closed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
