GQMBINED TALKING-MACHINE Application filed May 19,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK ARTHUR Anooon, a- British subject, residing at No. 14 Denb-igh Road, Armadale, near Melbourne, in the State of Victoria, Commonwealth of .instralia, have invented new and useful Combined Talking-hilachine Cabinets and \writing Desks, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to a combined talking machine cabinet and writing desk and has been devised with the object of effecting improvements in the construction of talking machine cabinets and of incorporating or Combining a writing desk therewith.
In this invention one of the improvements consists in so constructing the cabinet that the top of same is made a fixture and which provides a suitable rest or stand for flowers, ornaments and the like, the machine chamber and the horn chamber lying side by side or adjacent to one another. A further improvement comprises the provision of a horn extension or amplifier to convey the sound from the tone arm to the adjacent horn compartment and which extension passes diagonally from the front of the machine compartment where it is in communication with the tone arm to the rear of the cabinet to said horncompartment, and which extension, it is found, gives added beauty and an, improved tone resonance.
in the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a front elevationof the combined talking machine cabinet and writing desk constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan taken on line aa of Fig. 1 which shows the position of the diagonally disposed horn extension or amplifier which passes from underneath the tone arm in front of the machine compartment to the back of the horn compartment.
Fig. 3 is a plan of portion of a tone regulator or mufller employed.
In the drawings A represents a fixed top or cover of the cabinet and B and C repre sent two compartments, the compartment B housing the talking machine and hereinafter referred to as the machine compartment, and C a compartment having a horn built therein, and hereinafter referred to as the horn compartment, both compartments being positioned side by side or adjacent to one another.
The machine compartment B is provided CABINET AND WRITING DESK.
1923. Serial No. ceases.
placed on the turntable d and to facilitate the insertion and removal of needles. is the amplifier or horn extension which passes from under the tone arm (Z and diagonally across the cabinet to the rear of the horn compartment C. The motor F for revolving the turntable d is provided with the usual winding shaft and crank handle (1 which is shown extending through one side of the cabinet.
Underneath the machine and horn conipartments a combined pigeon hole and writing desk compartment 6 is provided, the upper half of which compartment contains a number of pigeon holes or divisions for the reception of stationery, pens, ink and the like, while the lower half is utilized to house a writing desk H which latter is slidably mounted in the guides h, secured to the inner surfaces of the cabinet.
A hinged panel I is provided and which, when in its vertical or closed position, completely covers the writing desk compartment but which panel has to be first drawn down to ahorizontal position in order to provide a support for the writing desk after which the latter is pulled out to its fullest extent. The writing desk and panel are provided with gripping knobs h and 2' respectively, the panel being provided with a catch (not shown) for locking said panel in its closed position.
The lower part of the cabinet is devoted to a divided compartment G for storing such as records and the like, two hinged doors J being provided to cover the front of same. i
The muffler or tone control employed consists of a fiat wooden member e which is slidably operated by means of a rod 6 projecting beyond the side of the cabinet. member 6 is adapted to slide over a horizontal section or opening w of the horn The shown. Having now described my invention what extension adjacent to the rear opening C and is provided with a fiat surface 6' which can be gradually brought over the opening x to reduce the tone, the adjacent opening 6 in the member 6 when brought to coincide with the opening :20, permitting the uninten rupted passage of the sound therethrough.
The member e is adapted to slide between the guides a supported in the'horn compartment O.
The horn compartment in the cabinet is suitably covered with a skeleton framework on aisilk background (not shown) to pre' sent an ornate appearance and to allow for the passage of the sound from the horn.
- The cabinet is preferably rectangular shape and is supported on four legs, as
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 'Aitalking machine cabinet having a't'op and providing two front-opening compartments arranged side by side directly under said top, a forwardly extending horn in one of said compartments, a talking machine in the other compartment, said last named "said compartment and swingable outwardly,
and an elongated transverse horn extension arranged below said floor and at one end extending into the horn compartment and bpening upwardly into the rear end of the horn and at its opposite end opening upwardly through said floor into said tone arm. In testimony whereof I have signed my a name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses; 1 V r V FREDERICK ARTHUR ALCOC-K.
