Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1922.
Application filed Aiignst 5, 1921. Serial No. 490,182.
To all whom it may camera:
Be it known that I, JACOB R. Rose, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the countyof Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Phonographs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to phonographsand has for its object the provision of a phonograph which is provided with a concavo-convex resonator between the tone arm and the amplifier whereby to improve the quality of sound given out by the device.
An important object is the provision of a cover which closes down and encloses the turn-table whereby the entire structure will be encased.
Another object is the provision of a storage compartment in the cover forthepurnection with the machine.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to 80 set up and knock down, efficient in use,
durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in 'view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and cla med and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through my device with the cover in open position, I Figure 2 is a plan view thereof, Figure 3 is a detail sectional view showing the compartment door open, and 4:5
igure a is an enlarged detail sectional view through the resonator.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown my device ascomprising a rectangular casing 10 within which is secured a horizontal plate 11 constituting the to of the amplifier chamber 12. Journa ed at substantially the center of this plate 11 is the usual turn-table 13 which supports the records during the playing thereof.
The numeral 14 indicates, conventionally, the speed control indicator and the numeral 15 indicates the usual lever used for starting and stopping. The usual spring motor mechanism is provided but is not shown as forming no part of the present invention. At one corner the plate 11 is formed with a circular hole 16 within which is engaged a downwardly extending concavo-convex metallic member 17 which is provided with an outwardly extending flange 18 engaging upon the top of the plate 11. At its center this'member 1 7 is formed with a socket 19, for a purpose to be described.
The numeral 20 designates the tone arm which carries the usual reproducer 21. Se-
cured Within the lower down-turned end of the tone arm is a transverse rib 22 within the center of which is secured a spindle 23 .which sea-ts revolubly within the socket 19. By this means it will be seen that the tone arm 20 may move as the reproducer moves along the record during the playing operation.
Located within the casing 10 near one end thereof, is a transverse partition 24 which defines a storage compartment 25 into which leads an opening 26 in the plate 11 normally closed by a hinged spring-pressed door 27 having a handle 28. When the device is not in use the tone arm is lifted off, the spindle 23 pulling out of the socket '19, after which the tone arm and reproducer are passed through the opening 26 and stored within the compartment 25. The cr'anki handle 29 used for winding the spring motor may also be removed and placed within this, compartment.
Hinged upon one edge of the casing 10 is a cover 30 which is adapted to be held closed by suitable catches 30 and this cover is provided near its open side with a hinged board or plate 31 upon the free edge of which is hinged a second board or plate 32. These two plate members 31 and 32 cooperate with the top of the cover to define a compartment 33 within which may be stored the disk records not being played. The hinge connection of the members 31 and 32 is ofthe spring type and both of these members are held in closedposition by a suitable spring catch 34:.
When the device is in use the cover 30 is opened and the tone arm is placed in position with the finger 23 seating withinthe socket 19, as shown in Figure 1; The device 15 used in exactly the same manner as any other phonograph. When the device 5 is not in use all the records are packed within the compartment 33 and the tone arm and reproducer are packed away in the compartment 25, as previously described, and the cover 30 is closed and locked. The casing 10 is provided at one edge with a suit.-
able handle 35 by means of-which it may be easily carried.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive phonograph which will be easily portable and which will therefore recommend itself for use on auto trips, picnics, camping parties, 'and the like, and in fact in all places and under such circumstances as would prohibit the use of the usual cumbersome machine. 7 1i is to be noted that the peculiarly constructed resonator employed will insure the emission of notes or tones of fine quality. 7
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in'the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my'invention, I claim:- I
' In a talking machine including a cabinet, and a sound board therein, the sound board being provided with a hole, 8 downwardly extending concavo-convex shell seating within said hole and provided at its center with a bearing socket, and a tone arm havin one end carrying a reproducer and pros vi ed at its other end with a spindle revolubly seating within said socket.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
