Description

.I. G. JOHNSON.
Gar-Axle Boxes.
No. 145,425, Patented Decl 9,1873.
witnesses: QJWW- Attorneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH Gr. JOHNSON, OF ELKTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE LUBRIOATING OAR- AXLE COMPANY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT lN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,425, dated December 9, 1873; application filed August 30, 1873.
To all whom it may conccm:
Be it known that I, Josnrn G. J OIINSON, of Elkton, in the county of Cecil and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Lubricator for Oar-Axle J ournals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section.
The invention relates to the mode of relatively constructing an axle-box and lubricating device, so that the spring-pressed oiler, which requires to be examined and to be supplied with wick or similar substance at difi'erent times, may be easily slid in and out of the axle-box without the necessity of removing bolts, nuts, or fastenings, and without detaching the oil-reservoir.
The peculiar construction by which I accomplish this object will first be fully described, in connection with all that is necessary to a full understandingthereof, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
A represents the car-axle journal which is to be lubricated; B, the ordinary metallic or other bearing; and O, the spring-pressed oiler, around which is wound some textile material that depends therefrom and dips in an oil-res ervoir. D is the axle-box, having a concavity,
d, at the bottom to serve as an Oil-IGSElVOll', and the longitudinal shelves (1 d, on which is supported and slid in and out the oiler-frame E, which has end-open lugs or bearings c c that receive the oiler O. The latter has springs c c resting upon the bottom of the bearings, and may have downwardly-projecting guideplates 0 c that pass through holes 0 e. The front of this frame is open over the reservoir (1 to allow the ready introduction of the lubricant. By this construction the oil can be supplied with facility, while the reservoir need not be removed whenever there is a necessity for examining the oiler O, and supplying it with wick or analogous substance.
I am aware that the cavity of axle-box has been heretofore constructed to admit of the adjustment of the washer or collars on axle -through the front opening thereof; but my construction contemplates an entirely different object.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The open-ended oiler-frame E, arranged to slide and be supported on shelves d d of axlebox and over an oil-reservoir, d, forming part of axle-box, as and for the purpose described.
JOS. Gr. JOHNSON.
