k'pplication filed February 28, 1922'. Serial No. 539,823.
` to provide a brush which is adapted for either rough cleaning or polishing and emboiilying brush unit-s character.
An additional object is to provide a cleaning brush in which a constant flow of water is maintained between the brush units, thereby keeping the brush at all tim'es free from dirt and grit and increasing the quality of the work done as well as a savingof labor.
A further object is to provide a cleaning brush of the character above mentioned including a brush holder and a built up brush portion detachably engaging the holder.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during` the continuance of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view improved brush.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section taken on line 2 2 of Figure 3, and,
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
The brush consists primarily of a holder 10 which may be made yof heavy blocked tin in perspective of the or any other suitable material and is prefer- I f polishing.
ably shaped as shown in the drawing.
Penetrating the holder at one endis a union 11 constituting' a hose connection whereby a liberal supply of water may be conducted to the holder. p g The sides of the holder are provided on the inside with longitudinally `extending grooves 12 providing ways for slides 1,3 of the brush proper. The brush proper is of the built up type, consisting of strips 14 of felt extending longitudinally of the holder. At their upper end, the felt strips are spaced apart by Vseparators or feeders 15; The feeders may be of two different of an interchangeablel types. Either a solid bar of metal with vertical feed tern, being hollowed the entire length.
assing transversely through the feeder strip and the felt strips, are securing bolts 16', the outer ends ofwhich engage slides 13 for retaining the parts in place. Slides;`
on ltheoutside, with longi- 13 are provided, tudinally extending tonguesl? which enter the groove proper is thus slidably engaged with the v,holderf and when inserted in the latter is groove 16, or of the frame patv in holder 10. The brush j held in place by means of locking bar 18 extending transverselyy of one end of the holder and hinged thereto as lshown at 19. rlhe other end of the locking bar is slotted lto receive locking tongue 20, the latter being pivotally connected to the holder and carry` ing a thumb nut 21.
W'hen the parts are assembled. as shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings, the bottom of water space 22 is formed by the up! per edgeof the brush-proper, the felt strips of the brush being held firm by the pointed projections 23 of projections penetrate the felt strips and the feeder strip, which.
prevent their rbeing pulled out from the holder. The lower or exposed portions of the felt strips are adequately supplied with water from the feed opening of the feeder strips and since there *is a constantl'low of water it is obviousthatthe brush will at all times be kept free from dirtandgrit 1 injurious to polished surfaces.` Consequently they cleaning of an automobile or wmdow can be better accomplished and without the mess or inconvenience attendant upon the use of a sponge lor mop.`
Two or more brush portions may -be provided for each holder, the felt 'strips of one beingof coarse material for rough cleaning and thel other of finer `material for From the foregoing it is -believed that the tion fore further detailed unnecessary.
What is claimed is n' f 1. A` fountain brush including a head portion having longitudinal sidegrooves, tongued slides engageable with the grooves of the holder, felt strips arranged side by side and extending longitudinally between the said slides, means fastening the stripsto the slides, saidy strips providing a hollow bottom for the hollow headsaid head hav jecting therefrom, a locking bar hinged to ing ahose connection, and the strips being the head for retaining the brush portion 10 notched to provide conduits between the in place, means for locking the said bar,
strips. and strips separating the upper ends of the 5 2. A fountain brush comprising a hollow said units and grooved transversely to probrush head constituting va liquid reservoir, vide liquid conduits.
a brush portion of separable units slidably ln testimony whereof l affix my signature. 15
inserted in the said head and partially pro- GEORGE M. GALE.
