Patented May 1, 1923.
PAJrN- JL BURNER.
Application filed February 24, 1922. Serial 1T0. 538,927.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELANEY ARKWRIGHT, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton Falls, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Burner, of which the following is a specification. v v
This invention relates to furnace attachments, and aims to provide novel means for directing air and powdered fuel to the burner of a furnace in proper proportions to facilitate the burning thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the fuel supplying nozzles with respect to each other to insure the fuel being properly mixed with the air entering the furnace.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides inthe combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of constructionhereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment .of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the attachment disclosing the same as connected with the fuel intake opening of a furnace.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the attachment.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the attachment.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the
reference character 5 designates a laterally extending pipe formed integral with the furnace casing, which pipe provides the fuel feeding opening to the furnace.
The attachment comprises a body portion 6 formed with. a circumferential flange 7 adapted to abut the flange 8 formed on the pipe 5, where the flanges may be secured as by means of the bolts 9.
The outer end of the body portion 6 is formed with cut out portions 10 to permit air to passinto the body portion, suitable means being provided for controlling the passage of air through the openings 10. .As shown, a pivoted member 11 is provided which pivoted member has portions overly in the openings. 10 and cut off the air entermg-the body portion 6, should it be de sired to reduce the quantity of air passing into the body portion 6. v
"Pipes 12 are formed. integral with-the body portion 6 and extend at angles with respect to the side walls of the body portion, the outer or free ends of the pipes 12 terminating at points in the same plane with the front end of the body portion 6. Adjustably supported within the pipes 12 are the pipes 13, which pipes are formed with flanges 14, by means of which the pipesmay be connected with a suitable blast of air for feeding powdered coal into the body'portion 6.
Thus it will be seen that by moving the in pipes 13 within the pipes 12,'the inner ends of the pipes 13 will be moved towards and away from each other to accomplish the adjusting result. It might also be stated that" passing from the opposite pipe causing the powdered coal to be thoroughly mixed with the air passing throughthe openings 10.
A pipe 15 extends from the body portion 6 and provides means for securing the supply pipe 16 to the body portion, the supply plpe 16 providing mea-nsfo'r directing a blast to the body portion or mixing chamber 6' for preheating the mixing chamber and facilitating the starting of the burning 'op- I eration.
.Pipes l7'also communicate with the pipes 13 and supply a blast tothe pipes 13 to'preheat the pipes and aid inthe burning of the fuel.
In the use of the device, a blast directed" throughpipe'16 and into the body portion or mixing chamber 6, where the same causes the mixing chamber 6 to become heated.
l Vhen the mixing chamber becomes heated to the proper degree, the blast through the pipe 16 is cut off and powdered coal is admitted to the pipes 13, the pipes 13 being Y however properly adjusted to cause the proper mixing of the powdered coal and air. f Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In combination with a furnace, a body portion in communicatlon with the furnace,
a fuel supply pipein communication with the bodyportion, pipes extending at an les with respect to the body portion and'having their outer ends disposed in a plane beyond In testimony that I claim the foregoing as one end of the body portion, angularly dismy own, I have hereto aflixed my signature posed. air delivering pipes positioned in the in the presence, of t-Wowitnesses,
first mentioned pipes and adjustable longi- 5 tudinally thereof, and having their deliver- DELANEY ARICWRIGHTi ing ends dis-posed towards each other, and Witnesses: terminating at points in spaced relation J. 'W'. HUMES,
With the fuel supply pipe. 7 D. M. HINE.
