To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVERETTE RAnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewisville, in the county of F orsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Shutter Operating and Securing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention isthe provision of simple, easily-operated and efficient means through the medium of which shutters may be opened and closed and secured in closed and open positions from a point within a room and without raising a 5 window sash.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the
invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed. In the accompanying drawings, forming 0- part of this specification Figure l'is a fragmentary elevation-with the door of the cabinet in open position.

I At 28 is a vertical sleeve in .the lbase tion of thewindow casing, -and;at 29 is a vertically-movablebolt, guided inithe sleeve 28' and adapted to enter the socket 6 when the outer shutter 5 is in closed position, (Figure 7.) The said bolt 29 is provided with arms 30v and 31, and a retractile spring 32 is connected to the arm 31 and tends to retract the bolt and release the shutter 5. A horizontal rock. shaft 33 1s journaled' in the wall 20 of the cabinet body 17 and in a fixed bearing 34 arranged inthe outer portion of the window casing 1, (Figures 3; and 7.) Said shaft 33 is provided within the cabinet body 17 with a handle 35, (Figures 1, 3 and 4.) At its outer end the shaft 33 has fixed thereto an armor disk 36 on which is a stud 37 that rests under and in engagement with the arm 30 on the shutter locking bolt 29-. Thus when the handle is in the position shown in (Figures l and 3), the bolt 29 will be secured against downward movement and the shutter 5 will be locked in closed position. When, however, the handle 35 is turned through a quarter of a revolution as indicated by dotted lines in (Figure 1), it will be noted that the spring 32 will be enabled to retract the bolt 29' and release the shutter 5.
As before indicated outward thrust of the rods 21 to the positions shown in (Figure 4) is necessary for the opening of the shut ters 4 and 5.
For the purpose of locking and securing the shutters in open position I provide the rock shaft 40 igures 3, 4, 8 and 9) with a handle 41 in the cabinet body 17 and with an arm 42 against the outer side of the wall 20 and adapted to be engaged against stops 43 and 44 on said wall 20. The outer end. of the shaft 40 is journaled in an appropriately fixed bearing 45, (Figures 3 and 4), and' near said bearing the shaft 40 has fixed thereto a plate 46, (Figures 3, 4 and 9.) Manifestly when the arms 27 are located as in (Figure 4), the shutters 4 and 5 being open, and the shaft 40 is turned about its axis to arrange the plate 46 as shown in Figure 10 relatively to the arms 27, the plate will prevent inward movement of the arms 27 and hence the shutters 4 and 5 cannot close. When, howevergthe shaft 40 is rocked to carry the arm 42 from the stop 43 to the stop 44, (Figure 8), the plate 46 will be positioned to clear the arms 27, and
v the shutters 4 and 5 can then be closed by inward pull on the rods 21,
It will bereadily understood from the foregoing that all of the manipulations described can be made from within a room without the necessity of raising the lower sash of the window.
I have entered into a detailed description ofthe construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is v 1. The combination of a window casing, shutters hinged thereto, pinions carried by the pintles of the hinges and fixed to the shutters, upright shafts having upper and lower gears, the upper gears meshed with said pinions, and levers fulcrumed in the base portion of the window casing and'having gears on their outer arms meshed with the lower gears of the upright shafts.
2. The combination of a window casing, shutters hinged thereto, pinions carried by the pintles of the hinges and fixed to the shutters, upright shafts havingupper and lower gears, the upper gears meshed with said pinions, and levers fulcrumed in the base portion of the window casing and having gears on their outer arms meshed with the lower gears of the upright shafts, the said pinions on the hinge pintles having bifurcated portions receiving the shutter members of the hinges to fix the pinions to the shutters.
3. The combination of a window casing, shutters hinged thereto, pinions carried bv the pintles of the hinges and fixed to the shutters, upright shafts having upper and lower gears, the upper gears meshed with said pinions, and levers fulcrumed in the base portion of the window casing and having gears on their outer arms meshed with the lower gears of the upright shafts, with push and pull rods guided in the base por'-' tion of the window casing and connected with the inner arms of the levers, arms in said rods, and adjustable means adapted in one position to cooperate with said in preventing inward movement of the rods and casual closing of the shutters, v

The combination of a window casing, shutters hinged thereto, pinions carried by the, pintles of the hinges and fixed to the shutters, upright shafts having upper and lower gears, the upper gearsmeshed with said pinions, and levers fulcrumed in the base, portion of the window casing and hay-- ing gears on their outer arms meshed with the lower gears of the upright shafts, with push and pull rods guided in the base portion of the window casing and connected with the inner arms of the levers, armsin said rods, and adjustable means adapted in one position to coo erat with said arms in preventing inwar movement of the rods 5. The combination of a window casing, shutters hinged thereto, pinions carried bv the pintles of the hinges and fixed to the shutters, upright shafts having upper and lower gears, the upper gears meshed with said pinions, and levers fulcrumed in the casing portion of the window casing and having gears on their outer arms meshed with the lower gears of the upright shafts, with push and pull rods guided in the base portion of the window casing and connected with the inner arms of the levers, arms in said rods, and adjustable means adapted in one position to cooperate with said arms in preventing inward movement of the rods and casual closing of the shutters said adjustable means including a rock shaft having a handle and also having a plate arranged to be swung into and out of the path of inward movement of th arms, and the push and pull rods and the rock shaft extending into a cabinet in the base portion of the window casing. The combination of a window casing, shutters hinged thereto, pinions carried by the pintles of the hinges are fixed to the shutters, upright shafts having upper and lower gears, the upper gears meshed with said pinions, and levers fulcrumed in the base portion of the window casing and having gears on their outer arms meshed with the lower gears of the upright shafts, with a bolt to lock the outer shutter, a spring to retract said bolt, and a shaft in the lower portion of the window casing having a handle and also having an arm and means on the arm to engage the bolt with the outer shutter. i g
