Be it known that we, EnwrNW/V. BUTTON and CLARENCE E. BUTTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention has reference to cuspidors. Y a v. Our object isto produce a sanitary cuspidor in which the bowl is normally closed by a sliding valve having means whereby the same may be moved to open position when the device is to be used and automatic means for returning the same to closed position after use. i
A further object is to produce a sanitary ,cuspidor for use upon traveling bodies, such. as railway coaches, or lobbies,-lavatories, and other places in which the bowl of the cuspidor is provided with a depending spout which passes through an opening in the floor andwhich has associated therewith, upon its under face, a casing providing therebetween a seat for a spring influenced sliding. valve, the latter being provided'with means in the nature of a flexible element, such as a chain which is guided over suitable pulleys to a place convenient to the user of the cuspidor and which has its end provided :with a hand hold which when grasped and pulled by the operator will cause the valve to be moved to open position and when released will permit the spring to again seek the valve and close the passage between the spout and the bowl of the cuspidor.
A still further object is to produce a sanitary cuspidor which will remain a permanent floor fixture, which is comparatively simple in construction, cheaply manufactured, marketed and installed, having a sliding plate in the nature of a valve which normally closes the outlet spout thereof and which valve is automatically closed and easily brought to open position by the operator. v
The foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction. combination and operative association of parts such as disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this specification.

While in Figure 1 of the'drawings we have illustrated our improvement lint-connection with a railway coach, it is to be understood that the device is not to be thus restricted in its useful capacity, as the same may be successfully employed in hotel loba bies, lavatories, or in factvin anyplace where cuspidors are required for use:
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
numeral 1 designates a portion of a railway coach and 2 the floor thereof. Between the seats in the coach we provide a floor with round openings throughwhich are passed the neck or spout portions "3 of the cuspidors i. On the under face of the floor, directly below the spout or neck 3 of the cuspidor we secure a two-part casting, the upper element being indicated by the numeral 8 and the lower by the numeral 9. ,The casting issubstantially square or rectangular in plan, but the elements thereof are provided with aligned rounded openings 10 and 11 respectively, which align with the neck or spout of the cuspidor.

The sections 8 and 9 have their confronting faces channeled or otherwise denressed from one to adjacent the other end thereof, the said depressions providing a wayfor a slidable plate or valve 18. The inner wall 19 of the depression serves as a stop for the valve 18, While the edges of the said valve are in contact with the side walls provided by the said depressions. The upper end of the valve is provided with an extension in the nature of a stem 20 which is guided through a depending flange 21 on a bracket 22 that is secured by means to the under face of the floor 2. On the stem 20 there is a spring 24 that contacts with the flange 21 of the bracket 22 and with pin or collar 25 on the spring 2 1 The spring 24; automatically seats the valve 18, and closes the passage between the cuspidor and the openings in the casting.
To the outer end of the stem 24: there is secured a flexible element which is preferably in the nature of a chain 26. This chain is guided under a grooved wheel 27 that is secured to the under face of the floor 2 and passes through an opening in the floor, being directed upwardly into the coach 1 and over a sheave wheel or pulley 28 that is secured to the side wall of the said coach. The upper end of the flexible element or chain 26 has secured thereon an enlargement in the nature of a hand hold 29 which prevents the outer end of the chain dropping from the sheave wheel or pulley and which also provides a means whereby a pull may be exerte'd on the chain to cause the same to draw on the stem 20 and unseat the valve 18.
It is believed that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will set forth the construction and operation of the improvement to those skilled in the art to which said invention relates, but it is to be stated that the device is not to be limited to the construction illustrated and described, as the same is susceptible to all such modifications as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having described the invention what We claim is V In a cuspidor for the floor of cars, etc., including, in combination; a bowl having an open bottom provided with an extending neck that is received in an opening in the floor, and means securing the bowl on the floor, a casting havingan opening there' through in register with the opening in the neck'of the bowl, said casting comprising two similar sections, one of which being secured to the under face of the floor,- and adjustable'means securing the second section to the last mentioned section, said sections having at their confronting surfaces 2. substantially rectangular depression entering from one side of the casting, a fiat valve re ceived in the depression, guided by the side walls thereof and limited in inward movement by contact with the inner wall thereof, a stem centrally formed on the outer edge of the valve, guide means for the stem,- and a helical spring surrounding the stem and exerting a tension between said guide means and said outer end of the plate whereby to sustain the same in a position to normally close the passage through the casting, and means for moving the stem to influence the valve to uncover said opening.
