Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. JOHNSON,
a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Measures and Funnels Combined; and I' do.

The object of this invention is to provide a measure equipped with a novel sliding valve which closes the communication between the funnel spout and measure body and is operated so as to permit a regulatedv amount of the contents of the, measure to be dispensed at the .will of theoperator.
A further object of this invention is to provide a combined measure and funnel 'of this character, which will be simple,rprac tical and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
`With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.

Like numerals of reference designate cor responding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the body of the measuring receptacle and it has one end fully-open. The body has secured to its bottom a plurality of spaced legs 6 to hold the body in upright position when being filled or not in use. The bottom is also provided centrally with an outlet opening 7 and secured to the wall of this opening and depending therefrom is a substantiallyv funnel shaped spout 8. Thel body 5is provided .with a vertical slot 9 and' has securedl to the interior thereof atja point ad]acent eachy vertical wall of the slot' an angle bracket'10'and these angle brackets are adapted to form a slot in which -is se-` cured a ygraduated glass 11 so that the contents. Vof the'receptacle may be readily and easily determined.' i
A cover 12 isihingedlysecured to the upper edge-ofthe body4 as at 13 and this cover has a tightconnection with thebodyfwhen closed sofas'to form an air tight closure.

A casing-l5 is secured tothe bottomof the receptacle or body 5 andhas one endsecured Vto andcommunicating with the spout 8 at its'point of'juncture with the bottom of the receptacle. The opposite end'of' the casing terminates flush with the peripheral edge Vof the bottoniand has secured therein a screw threadedv cap 16 which-is provided with a4 centralopening through which an-V Y operating rod 17 slides. A valve 18 is secured to the inner end of this rod and is adapted to be normally located in the spout 8 to close the opening 7, thus closing the communication between the spout 8 and receptacle or body 5. A coiled spring 19 is located within the casing 15 and 'surrounds the rod 17 and has one end secured to the cap 16, thus it can be seen that when the rod is drawn rearwardly or out of the casing 15 that the valve 18 will be urged against the tension of the spring into the casing 15 and open communication between the body 5 and spout to permit its contents to be readily dispensed therefrom and upon the inward movement of this rod the valve will seek its initial position `thus closing the communication between the body5 and spout 8.
A spring Operating member 20 has one end secured as at 21 to the wall of the body 5'and its opposite end secured to the outer end of the rod 17. The portion of the operating member 20 located within the handle 14; and parallel therewith is adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator positioned about the handle 14 so that he may withdraw the valve 18 from its seat in the spout and dispense a predetermined amount of the contents of the body 5 as desired.
A flat valve opening outwardly is hingedly secured as at 28 to the terminal of the spout 8 and this valve is adapted to be normally closed and actuated by the contents of the body. 5 passing into the spout 8, thus it can be seen that the spout vwill always be kept in a clean and sanita-ry manner when not in use.
The handlel 1% is substantially U-shaped and is provided in its bottom with a slot receiving the lower end portion of the member 20. The U-shaped handle l forms a gripping element for drawing thespring 2O outwardly.
A springcatoh 2li is secured to the handle 14 at the lower portion thereof and is oil'- set outwardly intermediate its ends as at 25, and this offset portion is adapted to constitute a stop and is adapted to engage the operating member 2O when forced rearwardly to hold the valve 18 unseated and establish a communication between the spout 8 and body 5.
In use, the valve 18 is seated as illustrated in Fig. 1, the cover 12 is raised and the body 5 illed with a suitable liquid to be dispensed. The contents in this body 5 may be readily determined by the graduated glass ll. When it is desired to dispense a predetermined amount of the contents of the body 5 it is only necessary t0 grasp the handle 14 and 2O and by pulling rearwardly on the member 20 unseat the valve 18 and permit a certain amount of the contents of thebody 5 to run down into the spout 8 and out into a suitable receptacle. 'When the desired amount has passed into the spout 8 it is only necessary to release the member 20 from the stop 25 and by the action of the spring 19 the valve 18 will be seated thus closing lthe communication between the spout 8 and the body 5.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1, A device of the character described including a container having a discharge opening in its bottom, a valve for said opening, a casing secured t0 the bottom of the container and slidably receiving said valve, a valve rod connected to said valve and eX- tending through said casing, a U-shaped member secured to one side of the container and having a slot in its bottom, an'upright flat operating spring disposed within said U-shaped member, said operating spring being secured at its upper end to said container and having` its lower end portion extended through the slot in the U-shaped member and connected to said valve rod, and a catch carried by said U-shaped member :tor locking said operating spring, said operating spring being adapted to be drawn toward said U-shaped member for operating lthe valve.
