Inksta'nds.
N0l 145,352, Paiented Dec.9,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT D. JUDD, OF NET HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN INKSTANDS.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 145,352, dated December 9,1873; application filed May 20, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. JUDD, of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Inkstands, of which the following is a specication:
I make use of two separate glass ink-bottles set into a metallic tray, and introduce a spongeholding cup between them, into which the sponge is held by an elastic band; and I einploy the edges of the cup for the hin ge-loops of the ink-bottle covers, thereby making a very compact inkstand, covers, and spongeholder combined, that is very light, cheap, strong, and durable.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan oi' the inkstands, covers, and sponge -holder 5 and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the ink-bottles, covers, and sponge-holder.
The plate a is made with feet b and penracks c, and recesses d d, for receiving the inkbottles e, of glass or other material. The cup f, for receiving the pen-wiping sponge g, is upon a stem or foot, l, that is fastened to the plate a between the recesses el, and the sponge g is retained by the elastic band i, that is passed around the loops r s upon the edges of the cup. The covers u 'v are each made with a loop, o, to surround the loop r or s, and with it form a hinge for the cover to swing upon. A stop retains the'cover when turned up, and when turned down the cover rests upon the neck of the bottle. The loop of the cover has to be slipped over the loop r or s before the ink-bottle is inserted into its place.
This inkstand is strong and compact 5 and, as a sponge-holder is applied with the said inkstand, a separate cup and sponge are rendered unnecessary. The elastic bandi retains the sponge against the action of the pen in wiping vthe same, and renders it unnecessary to employ a cup with a contracted rim to hold the sponge. The ink-bottles, being separate from both the stand and covers, can be removed for cleaning without disconnecting the covers. Holes might be made n the cup to receive a cord to retain the sponge.
I claim as my inventionl. The sponge-holding cup, united to the inkstand-cover by a hinge, in combination with the removable ink-bottle and the stand receiving the same, whereby the cup performs the two duties of a support for the cover and a holder for the sponge, as set forth.
2. The sponge-h olding cup f and elastic ban d or cordto hold the sponge in place, as specified.
Signed by me this 12th day of May, A. D. 1873.
A. D. JUDD.
