.ltppltcetion filed lilovcinher lit, llllll. Steriel lt'o. titted.
To all whom may concern:
lde it known thet ll, Cncrn hloweno Din- LISTONE, e subject of the liiingof Greet Brit ein, residing in tlwen Sound, county of 5 Grey, Province of Unterio, Cenede, heve invented certein new end useful improvements' in li oot-tlpereted llietches for Doors end the like, of which the following is e specificetion,
ll/fy invention reletes to improvements in foot-opereted letches for doors end the like, end the object of my. invention is to pro vide meens perticulerly edepted for use in connection with the doors of cold-storege 151 rooms end refrigeretors, (whichdoors ere of e heevy type), so thet the door will not heve to he opened hefore the loed is picked up, thereby enehling the door to he kept closed until the loud cerrier is in position to to enter the chemher or refrigeretor, therehy conserving the cold eir therewithin heceuse of the shorter length of time required to keep the door open, then when the seine-is opened hy hend'hefore the loed is picked up,
ht 'thereh enehlin me to meintein e more uni form degree of tempereture within the seid chemher or refrigeretor end consequently conserve in the consumption of ice, end in the following specificetion if shell descrihe to my preferred form of construction, end e modificetion thereof, end whet ll cleim es new will he set forth in the cleim forming pert of this specificetion.
Fig. l is e front elevetion of portion of e door end treme, showing my preferred form of contrivence mounted wholly on the outside. Q is it out elevetion of portion of e door end free, showing my modified form of e contrivence mounted, in pert, within the door-jiemh cesing, end l ig. d is e verticel section through the door-jemh ces ing showing my 5perticuler inenner of" mounting the letch-lifter-rod in piece.
in the drewing's, like cherecters of'reference refer to the semeperte.
it is portion of e door feeding into e coldstorege chemher or e refrigeretor, end pivoted thereto es et B is eny suitehle type of letch C, which co-ects with e. keeper 4i cerried hy the door-jemh eesing 5 in any suitehle menner, to meintein the door closed.
6 is the letch-lifter-rod essocieted with the door-jiemh cesing'h, eeteriorly, end heving its upper end if positioned underneeth the letch C. t is e foot opereting lever pivoted .5, which is et 9 to the hrecket 10, end the end if of this lever co ects with the lower end of the rod 6 to ectuete the seme.
By pressing down upon the lever 8 hy the foot es shown thus moving the latch C out of engegement with the keeper l, end so permit the door to open. Any suitehle means mey he employed to support the rod 6 such es keepers 12 cerried hy the door-jemh cesing 5.
weight of the rod 6 will return the lever it to normel position efter the foot is releesed, end so will permit the letch to engege with the keeper l when the door is c l osed,
As is usuel in prectice, the keeper iis lo-, ceted quite close to the door ll, end it will of course he self-evident thet the foot-opereted meens in question must he loceted out of the peth of movement of the door A. We
l offset the upper end 'i' of the rod 6 so esto locete this end hetween the keeper l end the edjecent edge of the door A, therehy giving me compect essocietion of the verious perts.
if desired, e housing it may he cerried hy W the housing It end the spring 15 mey he to dispensed with.
- in the modified form of my contrivence shown in Figs. '2 end 3., the letch lifter-rod 6 is mounted within the door-jiemh cesing which projects the offset end 7 of seid rod. The outer end of the slot 16 is surrounded hy e slotted plete l'l-which is secured to the outer side of the doorenih cesing.
Keepers it are mounted within the door- W jernh cesing 5' to guidethe rod ti. 'lhe door-jemh cesing is further provided with e slot 19 through which extends one ortion of the foot lever 8 which is suiteh y pivoted to the hrecket l0;
'lfhe operetion of my modified form of contrivence will he self-evident, end i it willhe seen upon referring perticulerly to Fig. 2 thet the upper end 7 of the rod '8', es
well es the foot lever d ere loceted out of ml the peth of movement of the door it.
lln contriv'ences of this cless it is necesse'ry thet the letch-lifter rod fi heve e positive verticel movement, end without eny pivotel connection with eny opereting perts, which hy errow, the rod 6 is lifted, till provided with e slot 16 through W and their proportions, may be altered or changed, and the upper end of the rod 6 may be located on the opposite side of the keeper 4 to that shown, provided the latch C be made longer, without de arting from the spirit of my invention. ut in all embodiments thereof the rod 6 must be located out of the path of movement of the door A.
What I claim is:
In combination a latch pivoted to a refrigerator door and the like and extending beyond one side thereof; a keeper attached to the door-jamb frame; a latch-lifter rod adapted to be supported by said door-jamb frame to have vertical movement only, and provided at its upper end with a laterally ofiset portion which operates adjacent one side of said keeper and underneath said latch, and a foot-operated lever against which the lower end of said rod rests, the said rod through its own weight returning to normal position when pressure is relieved from said lever.
