ANDRElV J. HALL, OF FARMINGTON, NEWV HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN F. GLOUTMAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE- KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,295, (laed D ccmbcr 9, 873; applicuti m filed October '29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. HALL, of Farmington, New Hampshire, have invented a certain Improved ShoeKnife, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a shoe-knife, more especially adapted to trim the shanks of boots and shoes; and it consists of an ordinary shoe-knife having a rounded bevel near and a rim or head at the outer end of the blade, as shown in the accompanying drawing, which represents, in perspective, such a knife, the various parts of which are the handle A, the blade B, the rounded bevel O, and the bead or rim D.
With the ordinary straight knife the shank is trimmed as nearly round as possible, and then the ridges are reduced by means of a heated tool made for that purpose. This process, manifestly, must occupy more time and produce a less uniform edge on the shank than will be produced by my improved knife, in which the rounded bevel is on an unvaryin g gage.
By means of this knife one man is enabled to trim a case of shoes for twenty-five cents less than by any other means. The rim D will prevent cutting the shoe, and by dispens ing with all caution against this injury will greatly facilitate the work.
I therefore claim 1. A shoe-knife having a curved blade, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. On a shoe-knife, the combination of the curve C and rim D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
