UNITED WALTER C. SZYKOWNY, 0F TOLEDO, OHIO.
FRUIT-JAR, HOLDER.
Application filed May 25, 1922.
To all whom it may con-061%:
Be it known that I, WALTER C. SzYKowNY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio; have invented a certain new and useful Fruit-Jar Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates particularly to a device for use in holding fruit jars while being filled with hot material, and has for its object the provision of a simple and efficient device of this character which is not only adapted to hold fruit jars during a filling operation and while screwing or securing the covers thereon, but which provides a receptacle for the jar adapted to catch any overflow from the jar. A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is adjustable to suit jars of different sizes.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is a section thereof on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a shallow pan-like receptacle having bearing yokes 2 and 3 rising from the bottom thereof at opposite sides of the receptacle center and adapted to support a pair of jar gripping jaws 4: and 5 therein, which havetheir jaw portions curved to cooperate to embrace a jar, and have the handle portions 6 projecting therefrom through a registering slot 7 in the side wall of the receptacle. The jaws '1- and 5 are pivotally secured at their free ends by bolts 8, or in any other suitable manner, to the bearing yoke 2 and have the other ends of their jaw portions provided with bolts or pins 9, which extend through slots 10 in the bearing yoke 3 to permit relative contracting and expanding movements of the jaws. It is evident that the jaws and their receptacle are secured together so that they may be lifted as a unit by the handle Serial No. 563,744.
6. To facilitate lifting the receptacle it is preferable to provide a handle 11 at one side thereof in opposition to the handles 6.
The jaws 1 and 5 are of a size to engage large sized jars, such, for instance, as twoquart jars, and when it is desired to handle smaller jars a reducing ring 12 is employed within the main jaws l-xand 5. This ring is of spring material of split circular form with one end lappingthe other and is provided at intervals therearound with a plurality of outwardly projecting fingers 13, which are adapted to be inserted at their outer ends either in a shallow set of notches 1% in the inner edges of the jaws 1 and 5 or in a deeper set of notches 15 in the jaws, depending on the size of the jars to be engag-ed. For instance, if a pint jar is to be engaged, the fingers 13 are set in the shallow notches 14 so as to contract the ring 12 sufiiciently to receive and engage a pint jar, and if a quart is to be used the fingers 13 are inserted in the deeper notches 15 which permits a greater expansion of the ring. The ring 12 also acts to exert an opening pressure on the jars.
It is evident that I have provided a simple combined jar holder and receptacle which is operable to grip and firmly hold jars of different sizes during the filling thereof and the screwing or securing of caps thereon, and that it may be quickly adjusted to suit jars of different sizes by either removing the ring 12 therefrom or by inserting the ring therein and placing its finger 13 in engagement with one or the other of the sets of notches 14: and 15.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is,
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of article gripping jaws mounted for opposed pivotal movements and having a set of notches provided in their inner edges, a compressible article engaging ring disposed between the jaws and having fingers projecting therefrom for seating in the notches in the jaws whereby a contraction of the jaws effects a contraction of the ring.
2. In a device of the class described, a
pair of oppositely curved article gripping jaws mounted for opposed relative pivotal movements and having a plurality of sets of notches in the inner edges thereof with the notches of the different sets of different depth. and a compressible article engaging ring disposed between the jaws and having fingers projecting outwardly therefrom for seating in the notches of any set to suit the size of ring desired, the ring having compressing and expanding movements with corresponding movements of the jaws.
3. In a device of the class described, a pan-like receptacle, a pair of opposite curved jaws pivoted within the pan at one side of its center for opposed movements and having handles projecting therefrom at a side of the pan, and a compressible reducing ring mounted between the jaws in engagement therewith and operable to have expanding and contracting movements with the jaws.
&. In a device of the class described, a pan-like receptacle, a pair of oppositely curved jar gripping jaws pivoted at one end within the receptacle at one side of its center for opposed movements and having handles projecting from their other ends without a side of the receptacle, each jaw haw ing a set of notches provided in the inner edge thereof, a compressible reducing ring removably mounted between the jaws and having fingers projecting therefrom and seating in the jaw notches whereby the ring is caused to have contracting movements with the jaws.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name to this specification.
WALTER C. SZYKOWNY.
