BALLOON ENVELOPE MATERIAL AND PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME.

To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that we, Enron TRENOKMANN and BRUNo TRENCKMANN, citizens of the German Republic, residing at Berlin-Tempelhof, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balloon Envelope Materials and Processes of Manufacturing the Same (for which I have filed applications in Germany, December 2 1, 1914; Austria, August 18, 1917; Hungary, August 27, 1917 Turkey, November 27, 1917 France, February 6, 1920; Great Britain, March 3, 1920; Japan, May 20,1920; and Italy, June 24, 1920), of which the following is a specification.
Our invention refers to balloon envelope material and more especially to a material formed of animal entrails and its particu lar object is to replace the animal materials used up till now by other animal products.
Up till now the so-called goldbeaters skin was the only balloon envelope material besides textile fabric whichwas made use of in constructing gas cells, the said material which, as is well known, comes from the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle, having been employed for this purpose either for itself or in combination with textile fabric. In later years, however, the great demand created for goldbeaters skin has increased its price enormously and moreover a scarcity in this material has been the result which renders it imperative toprovide for substitutes of similar properties.
According to the present invention, now, we replace the goldbeaters skin, either wholly or in part, by the entrails of horses or their epiderm, the entrails of cattle, pigs, sheep or the film surrounding the cattle stomach.
In order to render these different materials fit for use as a balloon envelope material, we proceed as follows: First of all the entrails are dissected and divided in proportions of suitable size substantially corresponding in length to the pieces of goldbeaters" skin used up till now. We thereupon subject the said material to a treatment adapted to remove therefrom all impurities, particles of fat, shine and the like, asby scraping the casings of the entrails with the back of a knife, whereby fatty parts and slime are removed therefrom, any impurities Application filed August 27, 1921. that might then remain can be removed by brushing. The cleaned material may be then subjectedto a preliminary treatment with oils or fats and if desired with agglutinants. In order to prevent thematerial from getting brittle we may'treat the material with a softening substance, preferably glycerine, or with an oil containing glycerine, before adhesively attaching the pieces together. sively attached together in such a way that they overlap each other and one piece always bridges the oint between two adaj acent pieces. In this manner a single layer or a plurality of layers may be formed according to the degree of mechanical resistance required.
Vi e may, however, apply a similar treatment also to a combination of our new material with goldbeaters skin, in case that this latter material shall be made use of for some reason or other.
We may further combine our new material with a suitable fabric. To this purpose we glue the new material and the fabric together by aid of suitable agglutinants either in a moist, or half dried or a thoroughly dry state, working in a moist state being preferable on account of its simplicity and lower cost. To this end the new material is stretched, the agglutinant is spread thereon and the fabric is then placed on the skin by aid of suitable appliances or else it may be made to firmly adherethereto by rolling.
The product obtained in this manner is ultimately impregnated with a suitable varnish to render it watertight, such varnish being applied either to one or to both sides.
We claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a gas tight balloon envelope material embodying the entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle.
'2. As a new. article of manufacture, a gas tight balloon envelope material embodying the cleaned and softened entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a gas tight balloon envelope material embodying the entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle, combined with goldbeater skin.

7. As a new article of manufacture, a gas tight balloon envelope material embodying a plurality of layers of the cleaned entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle, each layer consisting of a plurality of pieces adhesively attached together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces.

The herein described process of manufacturing tight balloon envelope material which consists in cleaning the entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle and adhesively attaching, them together. so that they overlap. one piece bridging the joints be tween two adjacent pieces.
11. The herein described process of manufacturing gas tight balloon envelope material which consists in cleaning the entrails of quadruped animals other than the epi derm of the blind gut of cattle, then adhesively attaching the pieces together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces and then van nishing the same.
12. The herein described process of manufacturing gas tight balloon envelope material which consists in cleaning the entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle, then softening the same and adhesively attaching the pieces together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adja cent pieces.
13. The herein described process of manufacturing gas tight balloon envelope material. which consists in cleaning the entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle andthen adhesively attaching them together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces, and then attaching goldbeater skin to said entrails.
14. The herein described process of manufacturing gas tight balloon envelope material which consists in cleaning the entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle, then treating the same with softening material, and then adhesively attaching the pieces together, so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces, and then varnishing the same.
15. The herein described process of manufacturing tight balloon envelop material which consists in cleaning the entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle, then adhesively attaching the pieces together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces and sticking-a fabric to one face of said material.
16. The herein described process of manufacturing gas tight balloon envelope material which consists in cleaning thefentrails of quadruped animals, then Qadhe sively attaching the pieces together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces, then stretching the same, then spreading adhesive material on one face thereof and then applying fabric to said face.
17. The herein describedprocess of manufacturing tight balloon envelope ma- 'lerial which consists in (cleaning the on trails of quadruped animals, treating the same with softening material, then adhesively attaching the pieces together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces and then sticking a fabric to one face of said material.

The herein described process of manufacturing gas tight balloon envelope terial which consists in cleaning the entrails of quadruped animals, then adhesively attaching the pieces together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces, then stretching the same, then spreading adhesive ma.- terial on one face thereof and applying fabric to one face thereof and finally applying varnish to a face thereof.

As a new article of manufactureagas tight balloon envelope material embodying layers of the blind gut of cattle and of the cleaned entrails of quadrupedv animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle, each layer consisting of pieces adhesively attached together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces and flexible sheet material adhesively attached thereto.
22. As a new 'article of manufacture a gas tight balloon envelope material embodying layers of the blind gut of cattle and of the cleaned and softened entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle, each layer consisting of a plurality of pieces adhesively attached together so that they overlap, one piece bridging the joints between two adjacent pieces, and flexible sheet material adhesively attached thereto.
28. As a new article of manufacture a gas tight balloon envelope material consisting of the combination of layers of fabric and interposed between them a layer of the cleaned and softened entrails of quadruped animals other than the epiderm of the blind gut of cattle.
