IMPROVEMENT IN NON-CONDENSING ILLUMINATING VAULT-COVERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,203, dated December 2, 1373 application filed October 22, 1673.

CASE 15.

To all whom it may concern:

'Be it known that I, THADDEUS HYATT, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N on-Oondensing Illuminating Pavement-Plates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the upper side of my improved grating, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

- The design of my invention is to enable an illuminating-covering to be employed in situations where more than ordinary protection is required from heat, cold, or dampness to which end it consists-in an illuminating pavement-plate, protected upon its lower side by means of a covering of wood, which latter is provided with light-openings that correspond in vertical position to the openings in said plate, and are each inclosed by one or more lenses, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawing, A represents a metal plate provided with a series of lightopenings, a, each of which is inclosed by means of an illuminatinglens, B, in the usual manner. Secured to or upon the lower side of the.

plate A is a wooden covering, G, which has any desired thickness, and is provided with light-openings c that correspond in number and vertical position to the openings a of said plate A. Each light-opening c of the wooden covering 0 is inclosed by means of a glass lens, D, which is placed at the lower side of said opening, while, if desired, a second lens, D, is placed near the upper side of said opening, air-spaces being left between said lens D, said lower lens D, and the upper lens 13.

The wooden covering, being a non-conductor of heat or cold, prevents the space inclosed from being effected by the external tempera ture, and prevents the lower side of said plate from sweating, while the glazed openings of said covering perform like offices for the lightopenings of said plate.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- An illuminating pavement-plate protected upon its lower side by means of a covering of wood, which latter is provided with light-openings which correspond in vertical position to the openings in said plate, and are each inclosed by one or more lenses, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
