IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATING ROOFINGS.
Spe cilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,4?3, dated September `2, 1873 application filed August 21, 1873.
CASE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE HYATT, ,of New York city, in the county of New York and in the State Of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminatin g Roofing; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accon1- panying drawing making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a plan view vof the upper side ot' my improved roofing, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Letters Of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
In the use of illuminating metal rooting it has been found that during sudden changes in the temperature of the air moisture would condense upon its lower surface, and by dripping downward render the apartment beneath uncomfortable and damp. rAnother objection to such roofing arises from its liabilityT to become warped and broken from Or by the action of heat Within a building whenever a fire oc-V nating Openings B, each of which contains a lens, C, that is secured in place in any desired manner. Upon and against the lower side of the plate A is placed a sheet of asbestus paper Or board, l), which has any desired thickness, and is secured in place by the fastenings of the lenses by cement or by any other suitable means. The asbestus covering adds to the strength of the rooting-plate without materially increasing its weight, and at the same time affords a complete protection to the same against injury from fire within the building, said asbestus being entirely incombustible. Another advantage Obtained is the avoidance of condensation of moisture upon the lower side of the rooting during sudden changes in the temperature ofthe external air, the asbestus covering being a non-conductor of heat. In addition to the above the roofing thus protected is materially warmer than that composed Wholly of iron.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s An illuminating metal roofing-plate having its lower surface covered and protected by means of asbestus board or paper, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day Of August, 1873.
THEODORE HYATT. Witnesses:
