IMPROVEMENT IN SETTINGS FOR HOT-AIR FURNACESL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,180, dated June 18, 1872.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES J. SHEPARD, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented, made, and applied to use Improvements in the Setting of Heaters for heating dwellings and other buildings; and that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a vertical cut section of the setting used by me, the heater being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical cut section of the same, the heater being shown in position. Fig. 3 is a view of the dome or cover of the setting inverted. Fig. 4 is a top view of the setting.

In the drawing like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters of reference.

The nature of the present invention relates to certain improvements, as more fully hereinafter set forth, in the construction of what is known as the setting for heaters for dwellings and other buildings, and is more particularly applicable to portable heaters, such as are usually placed in halls, rooms, or cellars; the object being to inclose the heater in such a manner that the setting used shall present a large amount of heat-retaining surface, and shall, as far as possible, assist in utilizing the heat supplied from the heater.

To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention I will describe the same.

The setting in the present case is composed, first, of a section of a cylinder or drum, A, formed of tin,.galvanized iron, or any suitable material, within which is placed a lining composed of bricks B and B separated from each other by grooved strips of metal a, the

sides of said grooved strips of metal a being turned over, and serving to retain the various layers of bricks B in position A. The bricks may be placed on end, as shown in drawing at B or crosswise, as at B.

The construction just spoken of will be clearly understood by a reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing.

Within this setting is placed, about centrally, the heater 0, an opening in the brickwork B and metal A being provided for the pipe leading to the chimney, and over the whole is placed a-dome-shaped top, D, from which run the pipes E for supplying heat to the house, and which is constructed so that an interior liningof bricks, B, may be placed upon the under side of the same and held in position by the strips of metal A Such being the construction, it .will be observed that the heat generated from the heater or given out by the same will be received by the bricks B and B and retained by the same, heating the air supplied through the base of the heater as the same passes up through the grooved plates of metal a, which, having been thus heated, is supplied to the pipes. The construction of the dome or top piece D, as shown, materially assists the heating of the air supplied as just stated.

Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is The combination of the exterior casing A, of metal, of an interior lining of bricks, B and B when the same shall be constructed and operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
