FIRE PROOF LATH FOR SLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Ne 320,072. dated `Tune 16,1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, NVILLIAM H. LANE and LOUIS LANE, both citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have jointly in- Vented a new and useful Form of Fire-Proof Lath for Slates or Tiles, of which the following is a specifieation.
The object of our invention isto provide, in connection with a netallic lath, a suitable substancc to which the slate can be firmly attached, and which will form a more or less elastic support for the same, thereby preventing breakage, together with provisions for secui-ing closer contact between the slates and lath thus affording a joint proo'against snow, rain, &0.
To secure this our invention consists in a hollow or grooved metallic lath incasing and' protecting on three sides a strip or filling of wood or other fibrous substance which it supports, and to which the slate is nailed or screwed in the usual manner. To protect this filling on the top, and to provide a packing between the lath and slate, we use a strip of asbestns or other firc-proof felt or paper in connection with a cement of a similar nature.
In the drawings, Figure l is a section.
A is the metal lath of such form as to support and inease the filling L. Itis Secured to the rafter K by :means of the knce-bolt G and the nuts N N or other suitable devicc.
B is the strip of felt, with its edge at b in \Vhen the filling is the small groove in L.
put in, the two sides aa' are pressed together, thus holding' the filling` and the edge?) firmly. B is further Secured at inter-Vals with the brad D, and has its edge b' turned over and back, as shown.
The top of the filling-strip L is of such form that the slate F is in close contact with B, when the slate E rests upon the fold b' and clears the side a' of the lath A.
XVhen the slate E is laid, the spaeeI is filled ilush with the cement, which packs the joint as F is nailcd or screwed down.
Fig. 2 is a general View with the parts narked the same, as in Fig. 1.
W'c are aware of the use of asbestns and other felts and cements for packing and fireproofing, and of the use oi' iron and wood for slate-laths; but we are not aware of the form and combination, as above described and shown.
\Ve claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- [he combination, with roofing slates or tiles, of hollow metallic lath ineasing on three sides a filling of wood or other fibrous material whose exposcd side is covered by a layer of felt and cement, substantially as shown and described.
XVILLIAM H. LANE. LOUIS LANE.
