i IM'PROVEMENT IN lLLUMlNATING VAULT-CCVERS.
.. Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.145,202, dated December 2,1873; application tiled October 22, 1873,
GAsE S.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THADnEUs HYATT, of New York, inthe county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Illuminating- Gratings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making,` a part of this specica tion, in Which- Figure l is a plan view of the upper side of an illuminating pavement-plate having its lens secured in place by my improved method, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each ofthe figures.
The design of my invention is to enable illuminating-lenses to be securely set in plates having but little thickness; and it consists in a lens set Within an inclosing` metal fra-me, which is capable of being soldered to and within a supporting-plate, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
-In the annexed drawing, A represents a glass lens, set Within. an annular metal frame, B, and secured. therein by means of cement or solder applied to the space left between the upper contiguous corners of said parts. The
frame B is preferably made tapering, its smallest end being downward, and may or may not have a horizontally-projecting head or liange at its upper end; but its outer side is tinned or otherwise prepared, so that, when placed Within a corresponding opening', c, in a supporting-plate, C, it may be securely soldered to said plate.
This method of securing` the lens in place enables any desired thickness of supportingplate to be employed, the attachment being' perfect and secu1'e,'whether it has a vertical dept-h of one inch or one-twentieth of an inch.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s An illuminating-lens set Within an inclosing metal frame, Which is capable of being soldered to and Within a supporting-plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, l1873.
