Description

T,. HYATT.
. illuminating Vault-Covers.
No. 145,192. Patented Dec.2 ,1'873.
Wi'mEs SEE:
IINITED STATES FATENT OFFICE.
THADDEUS HYATT, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ELIZABETH A. L. HYATT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATING VAULT-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,192, dated December 2, 1873 application filed October 22, 1873.
CASE 6.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TnADDEUs IIYATT, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminating- Grating; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper side of my illuminating-lens as repared for attachment to or within a plate. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same as applied to a plate and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said lens and its inclosing-ring separated.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to render more easy and secure the attachment of illumina ing-lenses within the light-openings of a pavement-plate, vault-cover, 850., and to enable plates having any desired thickness to be employed to which end it consists in an illuminating-lens, made tapering vertically, provided upon its periphery with a screw-thread, and provided with an inclosing metal ring, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as is hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a glass lens having any desired configuration of its upper and lower faces but made circular horizontally and tapering vertically, and provided upon its periphery, from its lower end upward, with a screw-thread, a, as shown in Fig. 3. The lens, thus constructed, is fitted into a metal ring or casing, 13, which, at its lower end, corresponds to, and fits over, the threaded portion a of said lens, while above the latter said ring is somewhat larger than said lens, but has the same upward and outward inclination of its sides, so as to permit of the insertion of an elastic gasket, G, between said ring and lens. At its upper end the ring B is provided with an annular flange, that extends horizontally outward, and furnishes a bearing for supporting said ring and its lens.
The ring 13 is first soldered within a pavement-plate, I), and the lens A and gasket 0 inserted and screwed downward until said gasket has, by compression, been caused to closely fill the space between said lens and ring, and form a water-tightjoint at such point.
This method of attaching the lens is efi'ective, durable, simple, and cheap, and enables it to be easily and quickly removed or replaced whenever desired.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s An illuminating-lens made tapering vertically, provided upon its periphery with a screw-thread, and combined with an inclosin g metal ring, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1873.
THADDEUS HYATT. TVitnesses AMBROSE MoNELL, CHARLES SPYR.
