wherein it is found applicable, and the inventionvhas for its object to provide a lock ofsuch class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth,with means to prevent the opening thereof surreptitiously or by any one not familiar with the necessary adjustment thereof to move the lock elements to a position to permit of the actuation of the lock to release the element held thereby in locked engagement.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a combination lockwhich is simple l in its construction and arrangemennsti'ong,
durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, readily assembled, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction,` combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompany- Ying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment `of the invention, butit is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which-come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

A combination lock in accordance with this invention, is illustrated, by way of example, for securing the sliding door of a freight cai', but it is to be understood that the lock can be employed with respect to the securing of any elementv to which the lock can be attached, and referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes the body portion of a freight car, 2 a door opening, and 3 a slidabledoor for closing the opening 2. `The body portion 1, at its side, is cut away `closed by the casing 6. The front of the casing 6, has secured thereto, a pair of parallel and spaced guide bars 9, between which is slidably mounted a closure plate 10, for concealing the dial disks, as well as the actuating or operating means for shifting the elements of the lock to released position. The closure plate 10, has a knob 11, to provide for the convenient shifting of the latter when the plate 10, is positioned to conceal the .dial disks and operating means of the lock. The plate 10, is secured in such position by a seal, as indicated at 12. The front of the casing 6, has an apertured bracket 13, against which is positioned an apertured lug 14, on the plate 10, and through the lug 14, and bracket 13, extends the seal 12.
The door 3, on its inner face, has secured thereto, by the hold-fast devices 15, a latching element 16, which when the door 8, is closed, extends through an opening` 17, formed in the side 5, of the door frame. The latching element 16, is notched as at 18, and when the door 3, is closed, the latch element extends within the body of the car, and inwardly with respect to that side of 4 the body of the car to which is secured the casing 6. Journaled in the casing 19, rearwardly with respect to the shafts 52, 53, and prefy -erably in parallelism with respect to the `arm 67, to provide for the actuation of the shaft 66, for the purpose of releasing the bolt 30, from engagement. with the locking v element 16. The shaft 66, has secured therew on, intermediate its ends, a grooved mutilated pulley 68, to which is connected as at 69, a flexible pulling member 70, which is attached by the eye 71, to the slide 22. The pulling member 70, extends rearwardly from the slide 22, and over the shaft 38, and
is adapted to shift the slide 22, into the` slots 44, against the action of the springs 34, when the locking disks 39 to 42, have been adjusted to a position whereby the slots *44, will be arranged in parallelism.
Connected to the slide 22, and projecting` rearwardly therefrom, is a pair of throwout arms 72, having a hooked rear end 73,
which are permanently in engagement with the locking disks 40 and 41, and the function of the arms 72, is to shift the locking disks 40 and 41, from set position after the bolt 30, has been shifted to release the locking element 16, and when pressure has been removed from the lever 67. When the lever 67, has been released by the operator, after the bolt 30, has been shifted from locking engagement with the locking element 16, the expansive action of the springs 34, will shift the bolt 30, upwardly, which carrying the flexible member 34, therewith, will move the slide 22, out of the slots 44, and as the slide 22, moves forwardly, the throw-out arms 72, will be carried therewith, causingthe shifting of the disks 40 and 41, and mov ing the slots 44, out of alignment with the other of the slots, and as the disks 4() and 41, are shifted, the setting wheel 46, will also be shifted and by this action the set combination will be destroyed so that it will be impossible for any unauthorized person to ascertain the correct combination from the dials, due to the fact that after the locking disks have been shifted in the manner as stated, an incorrect combination will be shown by the dials.
By way of example, a combination is illustrated in Figure 1, of the drawings as 40, 10, 15, 20, carried by the dials 54, 55, 56 and 57, respectively and when the combination numbers have been arranged to align with the pointers 64, the locking disks will then be positioned whereby the slots 44, thereof will be in parallelism and when the shaft 66, is actuated through the medium of the lever arm 67, the slide 22, will be pulled rearwardly and enter the slots 44, which provide for the moving of the bolt 30, from engagement with the locking element 16.
It is readily apparent that, unless all of the locking disks are shifted so that all. of the slots 44, will be in parallelism, it will be impossible to move the slide rearwardlj,Y a sufficient distance to shift the locking bolt 30 to released position, since but one disk unadjusted would be sufiicient to arrest tie rearward movement of the slide.
The top 75, of the casing 19, is removable, for the purpose of adjusting and changing the combination, or for other purposes. Whenever it is desired to adjust the position of any one of the setting wheels to change the combination, the cover is ze moved, and the lock nuts holding the setting wheels in position are loosened, and the settingA wheels are then set out of mesh with the locking disks, and these latter are slightly turned. The setting wheels are then secured in position and the foregoing adjustment provides for a new combination. Whenever a new adjustment is had, it will be `necessary to note the numbers at which the dial disks are set in order to ascertain the new combination, after which the setting wheels should be given a few turns so that no unauthorized persons may ascertain the new combination.
By slight changes in the position of the lock bolt and the location of the latching element secured to the door, and also increasing the length of the flexible member 25, the lock can be employed in connection with swinging or other doors, and it is also obvious that the lock can be employed whether positioned with respect to the inside or outside of the door, although the ex ample shown illustrates the lock as beingpositioned with respect to the inside of the door. Each of t-he locking disks although operating on the same shaft revolve and turn independently with respect to each other and each of the setting wheels meshes with and revolves a locking disk independently. By this arrangement, it requires a key figure or indicator for each of the dials, and this must be known to a person desiring t0 open the door or to actuate the lock to release the door.
The foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, describes and illustrates the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes in the detail of the construction can be had without departing from the spirit of the invention.
