REGISTERING SEAL FOR CAR AND OTHER DOORS.
Application filed March 21, 1925.
This invention relates to seals for car and other door locks, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel device of this character which shall include a register adapted to be actuated by and during each application of the seal, whereby to provide for each application of the seal a number by which it may be determined whether the seal has been removed and replaced by an i'inauthorized person.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a seal of the character stated which may be easily and quickly applied or removed, and which shall be simple and durable and inexpensive of manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views of the accom panying drawings by similar reference characters.
In the drawings 1 designates a casing which is provided in its front wall with a sight opening 2 closed by a glass panel 3 and which is provided with a finger 4 extending upwardly from the rear wall thereof.
The register comprises wheels 5, 6, 7 and 8 each numbered from to 9 and loosely mounted upon a stationary shaft 9. The wheels 8 are so arranged within the easing 1 that a single number of each is visible through the opening 2. Each of the wheels Serial No. 17,379.
58 is provided at one side of a disk 10 which is smaller in diameter than the wheel and which is provided with a radial notch 11. Disks 12 are secured to the disks 10, and each of the former is provided with a pair of gear teeth 13. The gear teeth 13 are located at opposite sides of the notches 11. The wheels 68 have secured to their opposite sides spur pini-ons 14, and the wheel 5 has secured to the similar side thereof a ratchet disk 15. Pinions 16, 17 and 18 are loosely mounted upon a stationary shaft 19 and provided with alternately arranged Wide teeth 20 and narrow teeth 21, the wide teeth 20 contacting with the peripheries of the disks 10 and the narrow teeth 21 engaging the teeth of the gears 14. A pawl 22 yieldingly held by a spring 23 in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 15, prevents casual movement of the wheel 5, and the engagement of the wide teeth 20 with the peripheries of the disks 10 of the wheels 5-8 prevents the wheels 6, 7 and 8 from having casual movement. A step by step movement is imparted to the wheel 5 through the medium of a disk 24 which is loosely mounted upon the shaft 9 and which is provided with a pawl 25 yieldingly held in contact with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 15 by a spring 26. lVhen the disk 24 is rocked in one direction, the wheel 5 is advanced one number, and when the wheel 5 has been completely rotated it will advance the wheel 6 one step due to the connection established between these wheels by the pinion 16 and the notch 11 and gear teeth 13 of the wheel 5. The wheel 6 will similarly operate the wheel 7 and the latter will similarly operate the wheel 8. When the disk 24 is released it is returned to normal position by means of a spring 27. The register may be provided with as many numbered wheels as found desirable or necessary.
A bar 28 is slidably supported upon the front side of the finger 4 by short flanges 29 extending inwardly from the opposite vertical edges of the finger and overlapping the bar. The lower end of the bar 28 extends into the casing 1, and is provided with a transversely extending elongated slot 30 for the reception of a pin 31 carried by the arm 32 of an elbow lever 33. The lever 33 is pivoted as at 34 to the inner side of the rear wall of the casing 1, and its arm 35 lies in the path of a lug 36 car ried by the disk 24. The bar 28 is normally supported in elevated position, and the arm of the lever 33 is normally retained in spaced relation to the lug 3G, by a spring 87. To limit the movement of the bar 28 and the lever 33 under the influence of the spring 37, a stop 38 is securec to the rear wall of the casing l in the path of the arm lVhenever the bar 28 is moved downwardly or inwardly, it rocks the lever 33 in the direction to carry the arm 35 thereof into contact with the lug 3F) and rock the dish 2% on the shaft 9 against the tension of the spring 27. lhis movement oi? the disk 24: imparts step by step motion to the nunil'rered wheel 5. lVhen the bar 28 is released the spring 37 returns itand the lever 83 to their normal positions and the spring returns he disk 21 to its normalposition. The bar 28 is moved downwardly and inwardly on each application of the seal. and due thereto the re ister will be actuated on each application of the seal in such a manner as to provide a number by which it may be determined whether the seal has been removed and replaced by an unauthor' ed person. in applying the seal, the linger is adapted to be inserted th 'ough the slot 390i the pin or bol 40 of a door or other lock. During the application of the seal the flanged upper end ll of the bar 0 with the pin or bolt s0, and as contacts the result the bar is moved downwardly and advances the register one number.
To retain the tongue l applied to the pin orbolt 40 a latch is pivotally connected to the front side ot'the tongue 4 by a bolt passing through the latch and through cars 44: carried by the tongue. The latch is of channel formation, including a front side 45 disposed opposite the front side of the tongue t and lateral sides 46 embracing the lateral edges of the tongue 4. The latch is pivoted at its lower end topermit its upper end to be swung forwardly and rearwardly with respect to the tongue l during the application or removal of the seal. A coil spring 4-7 which surrounds the pivot pin li) and the ends of which engage the lower edges of the lateral sides 44) of the latch 42, normally holds the latch in closed position. The movement of the latch 42 in the direction oi the tongue 4 under themtluence ot the spring 1 7 is limited by the torward end of the flange ii of the bar 28. The upper edges of the lateral sides 4:6 oi the latch .12 are inclined downwardly and rear rardly as at 48 to permit the latch to be swung forwardly with respect to the tongue by the bolt or pin 40 during the application of the seal. When the seal is applied, the bolt or pin it) occupies recesses in the lateralsidcs of the latch 42, and as soon as the pin. or bolt is in these recesses the latch i2 is returned to closed position It will thus be seen that by the spring 57.
the seal cannot become accidentally oetached from the bolt or pin 40, and that the latter holds the bar 28 depressed until the removal of the seal. When the bar 28 is depressed a lug 50 carried by the front side thereof eng ges the lower angular end 51 01 a trigger 52. The trigger 52 is pivoted at its lower end upon a. bolt 53 carried by the lugs it and is provided with a vertical slot which receives a bolt56 carried by the lateral sides l6 of the latch 4- lVhen the ug 50 is in contact with the angular end 51 of the trigger 52, the latch 42 is held against casual forward movement. Ah
though the seal is held against accidental ren'ioval from the belt or pin 40, by the parts 4 1 ,50 end 52, it may be manually removed with comparatively little effort, and when removed the parts 28, 33 and-2i are returned to their normal positions by the springs 37 and 27.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection Witn the accompanying drawings, it should be apparent that when the seal is applied the register will be actuated to present a number at the opening 2 by which may be determined whether the seal has been removed and reapplied by an unauthorized person, and that since the seal L cannot be removed and reapplied without changing the number it is impossible for an unauthorized person to remove and reapply the seal without detection.
The advantages ot the construction and of the method of operation of the seal will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. lVhile we have described the principle of operation-of the- ,seal, together with the structure which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereot, we des re to have it understood that the structure shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the invention as claimet lVha-t is claimed is:
1. A seal comprising a registering mechanism, means adapted to removably connect the seal to a lock element, and means adapted to be moved by the lock elementduring the application of theseal thereto to effect-the actuation of the registering mechanism.
2. A seal comprising a registering mechanism, a lock element engagi carried by the tongue and connected to said mechanism and adapted to be actuated by said element on the application of the seal thereto, and means for removably connecting the seal to said element.
A seal comprising a registering mecha nism, a lock element engaging tongue, an element carried by the tongue and connected to said mechanism and adaptedto be moved by said lock element to actuate saidinechzu nism on the application of the seal, and a tongue, means retaining element adapted to engage the lock element to removably connect the seal thereto.
4:. A seal comprising a registering mechanism, a lock element engaging tongue, a bar slidable on the tongue and connected to said mechanism, and adapted to be actuated by the lock element on the application of the seal, and a retaining element adapted to engage the lock element.
5. A seal comprising a registering mechanism, a lock element engaging tongue, a bar slidable on the tongue and connected to said mechanism, and a lock element engaging latch carried by the tongue.
6. A seal comprising a registering mechanism, a lock element engaging tongue, a bar slidable on the tongue and connected to said mechanism and adapted to be actuated by the lock element on the application of the seal, a lock element engaging latch carried by the tongue, a trigger carried by the tongue and connected to the latch, and a lug carried by the bar for engagement with the trigger when the seal is in applied position.
7. A seal comprising a registering mecha nism, a lock element engaging tongue, a bar slid-able on the tongue and connected to said mechanism and adapted to be actuated by the lock element on the application of the seal, a latch connected to the tongue and adapted to engage the lock element, a trigger pivotally connected to the tongue and having a pivotal and slidable connection with the latch, and a lug carried by the bar for engagement with the trigger when the seal is in applied position.
8. A seal comprising a registering mechanism, a lock element engaging tongue, a bar slidable on the tongue and connected to said mechanism and adapted to be actuated by the lock element on the application of the seal, a lock element engaging latch, and means adapted to prevent the casual disconnection between the latch and lock element.
9. A seal comprising a stationary shaft, numbered wheels loosely mounted on the shaft, disks each provided with a radial notch and secured to the Wheels and having a diameter less than that of the wheels, spur pinions secured to the opposite sides of certain of said wheels, a second stationary shaft, pinions provided with alternately arranged narrow and wide teeth, the wide teeth contacting with the peripheries of the disks and 'the narrow teeth engaging the spur gears, and actuating means connected to one of said wheels.
10. A seal comprising a stationary shaft, numbered wheels loosely mounted on the shaft, disks each provided with a radial notch and secured to the wheels and having a diameter less than that of the wheels, spur pinions secured to the opposite sides of certain of said wheels, a second stationary shaft, pinions provided with alternately arranged narrow and wide teeth, the wide teeth contacting with the peripheries of the disks and the narrow teeth engaging the spur gears, a ratchet disk secured to the other side of the remaining wheel, a pawl engaging said ratchet wheel, a disk provided with a lug and a pawl of which the latter engages said ratchet disk, a pivoted lever adapted when moved in one direction to engage said lug, and means adapted to actuate said lever on the application of the seal.
11. A seal comprising a registering mecha nism including a ratchet disk, a second disk provided with a pawl engaging said ratchet disk, a pivoted lever for actuating said last named disk, a lock element engaging tongue, a bar slidable on the tongue and connected to said lever and adapted to be actuated by the lock element on the application of the seal, and a retaining element for engagement with the lock element.
12. A seal comprising a registering mechanism, means adapted to removably connect the seal to a lock element, and means for operating the registering mechanism and adapted to be operated during the application of the seal to the lock element.
