J. VILARDO.
SASH LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED JUN4E14. 1918.

Klfll ing, the sash 1 is JOSEPH VILARDO, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
SASH-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedDec. 10, 1918.
Application filed .Tune 14, 1918, Serial No. 240,017.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH VILARDO, a, citizen of the United States, residing at Buf falo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the fol"- lowing is a specification. J
This invention relates to sash. looks and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.- 1
An object of the invention is to provide a sash locking device of simple and durable structure, one which may be aeasilyand quickly manipulated to secure the sash or release the same.
With this object in view thelock comprises a bolt slidably mounted in the casing which holds the sash and adapted to engage in a socket provided at the edge of the" sash. A spring is operativ'elyconnected with the said bolt for holding the same in a protracted positionwith relation to the casing. A lever mechanism is mounted in the casing and is adapted to be manipulated to move the bolt to a retracted position whereby its ends will disengage the socket in the sash.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through a sash and window casing, showing my device applied,
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary front elevation.
As illustrated in the accompanylng drawprovided at its edge with a series of notches or sockets 2. The sash 1 is mounted for movement in a casing 3 and in the usual manner.- A bolt 4 is s1idably mountedin the casing 3 and its end portion is adapted to enter one of the notches 2 when the sash is held at a locked position with relation to the casing. A spring 5 is housed within the casing 3 and one end of the said spring is connected with the casing and the other end thereof avitl'i' the bolt 1.
The spring 5 is under tension with a tendency to normally hold the end portion of the bolt 4 projected beyond'the edge of the casing 3 and towardthe sash 1;
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 a pulley 6 is journaled within the casing 3 and a lever 7 is fulcrumed within the casing. A flexible chain 8 is connected at one end With. the bolt 4: and at its other end With one.
claimed is connected with the lever,
end of the lever 7. The intermediate portion of the chain 8 is trained around the pulley 6. Consequently it will be seen that when the lever 7 is swung the chain 8-is moved longitudinally whereby the bolt 4 is withdrawn or moved to a retracted position with relation to the casing 3 'and against the tension of the spring 5.
, A rod 9 is end with one end of the lever 7 and the said rod passes through the sides of the casing 3. A knob 10 is journaled on the rod 9 and the said knob is provided at its side with a lug 11 adapted to enter a recess l2'provided in the casing 1 whereby the said knob 10 and the rod 9 nal movement.
When the knob 10 is turned upon the rod 9 so that the lug 11 is moved out of the recess 12 the knob and rod may be moved are held against longitudilongitudinally consequently means are pro-.
vided for swinging the lever 7. \Vhen the knob 10 is turned upon the rod 9 so that the lug 11 enters the recess 12 the parts are locked against the movement just stated.
It is apparent that when the sash has been adjusted in the casing 3 the sashmay be held at the adjusted position by permitting the end of the bolt 4 to enter one of the notches 2. 'VVhenit is desired to move the sash this may be accomplished by manipulating the lever whereby the end of the bolt is withdrawn from the notch in the edge of the sash. 7
Having described the invention what is In combination with a sash movably mounted in a casing, a sash lock comprising a bolt ,slidably mounted in the casing, a spring for normally holding the bolt in projected position with relation to the easing, a lever fulcrumed in the casing, a pulley journaled in the casing, a chain connected at one end with the bolt and at its other end with the lever and having its intermediate'portion trained around the pulley, a rod a knob journaled upon the rod and having a lug, the said casing having a recess adapted to receive the said lug.
JOSEPH VILARDO.
