Description

T. HYATT.
Illuminating Vault-Covers.
Patented Dec. 2.1873.
INVENTDFL 1, ZJz-ZMMWA O v filizg y M5 'S PRIZES) UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE,
THADDEUS HYATT, OF NINV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ELIZABETH A. L. IIYATT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN lLLUMlNATING VAULT-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,190., dated December 2, 18723 application filed October 22, 1873.
Case 16.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUS IIYATJ, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vault-Covers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper side of my improved vault-cover, and Fig. 2 is a central cross-section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable the lightopenings of an illuminatil'lg vault-cover, pavementplate, 850., to be easily and quickly opened or closed whenever desired; and it consists in an illuminating vault-cover, pavement-plate, &c., provided with a detachable lens-holder, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a metal plate having any desired size, shape, and thickness, and provided with a series of light-openings, a,which latter are made somewhat larger than would be required for the reception of the lens B. Fitted upon and over the upper surface of the plate A, and, if desired, over its edges, is a sheet-metal casing, U, which is provided with light-openings c, that correspond in number and position to the openings a of said plate, but have the size required for the reception of the lenses B. Upon the lower side of the casin g O, and encircling each lens-opening c, is a thimble, c, which extends downward into the openings (1, and forms a socket for, and within which is cemented or otherwise secured, a lens, B, the whole being so arranged as to cause said lenses to be removed with said casing, so as to leave said light-openings a of the plate A unobstructed. A number of bolts, 1), secured to the lower side of the casing 0, pass downward through suitable openings provided within the plate A, and receive upon their lower threaded ends wing-nuts I], which, when screwed upward against the lower side of said plate, securely lock said casing in place.
If desired, buttons or bearings F may be secured to or upon the upper side of the casin g or lens-holder O, for the purpose of protecting the lens from abrasion and injury.
As constructm'l, it 'will be seen that but slight labor is required to remove or replace the lens-holder and its lenses; that, when removed, the full size of each light-opening becomes available for ventilating purposes; and, when replaced, said lens-holder completes the vault cover, and renders it practically the same as though constructed in the usual manner.
Having thus ful y set forth the nature and.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1.873.
THADDEUS HYATT.
Vitnesses:
AMBROSE MoNELL, CHARLES SPYR.
