BUSINESS AS THE G. U. ANGEVINE DRAPERY HANGER.
Application led May 7,
To dl viii/10my t may concer/lt.'
Be it known that I, GLENN U. ANcnvizvr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drapery Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drapery hangers and is concerned particularly with the provision of an especially serviceable duplex hanger of this kind which can be sewed to the edges of the. draperies at a minimum labor cost and which,4 furthermore, is especially adapted for produc-tion in commercial quantities at a low manufacturing cost.`
`I am aware that numerous kinds and forms of drapery hangers have been proposed hereto-fore, but these have invariably comprised either complicated arrangements of a comparatively great number of parts not commercially feasible of production or else they proved to be unsatisfattory and generally' impractical because of the prohibitive labor cost incurred in sewing them on the edges of the draperies.
The novel features of my improved form of drapery hanger will be discussed more fully in the following description which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawing wherin Figure 1 is a perspective of the hanger illustrated in the course of attachment to the draperies. @ne drapery only has been illustrated sewed 'to one side of the hanger and none to the other side, in order not to obscure the hanger and also to demonstrate better the facility with which the hanger may be fastened to the drapery. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the hanger secured at opposite sides to draperies and positioned astride a drapery sup porting rod. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the hanger detached, and Fig. t is a horizontal section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The same reference numerals apply to corresponding parts in the three views.
In the drawings the reference numeral represents the hanger which is adapted to carry a set of two draperies G-6 on opposite sides of a supporting rod 7. The hanger yconsists of an inverted substantially U- 1921. Serial N0. 467,777.
shaped brace or sub-frame 8 to the legs of which are secured strips 99 for carrying draperies. These strips are slightly longer than the legs 10of the sub-frame so that they project a substantial distance above the arched portion or bridge 11 spanning the hanger between the strips 9. The strips are fastened to the legs 10 of the sub-frame by means of eyelets 13. rI'he eyelets together with the openings 14 punched in the upper ends of the strips 9 serve to admit the seamstresss needle in making the stitches 15 which hold the hanger tothe edge of the drapery. lWhen the draperies are in place, as shown in Fig. 2, they effectually conceal both the rod 7 and the hangers 5 and make a. presentable appearance.
It will be observed with what easeI the hanger can be sewed to the drapery. In hangers of the duplex type used before, the bottom portion was not open as at 16 so that theseamstress in sewing the hanger on the edge of the drapery had considerable difficulty. In order to` make' astitch it was necessary to pass the needle through the loop afforded to receive the rod 7 and besides there was the necessity always of inserting the needle at an angle, which frequently resulted in breakin the needle and considerable delay generally which, of course, greatly increased the labor cost and discouraged the use of these hangers.
A pin 18 joins the legs of the frame and has reduced ends 1SA which pass through openings in the frame and are upset on the voutside of the strips 9, as shown in Fig.
4 1. It will be seen that the pin 18 thereby constitutes a substantial rigid brace which holds the legs of the frame spaced properly. This pin serves also as an axle for the antifriction roller 19 which is preferably grooved to conform to the rod 7 on which itl rolls. Spacing rings 20 are interposed between the roller 19 and the legs of the frame to maintain at all times proper r lation of the roller and to keep an even keel as the hanger is moved along the rod. The arched brace 11 besides serving as a dustguard for the roller 19 and its spacers, may be slightly yieldable so that, for example` if the drapery becomes caught or is pulled carelessly, the frame will yield slightly and the strain on the stitches l5 cannot therefore be sufficient to tear them.
It was customary in this art to provide in connection with the drapery rod usually a pair of rollers rather narrow and Ytrecpiently on arcuate axles. These hangers were not satisfactory because the rollers would bind on their axle and would also cut the drapery rod; also -they were very noisy in operation on account of the looseness and frailty of the parts. l,Vith the arrangement herein shown these objections are entirely obviated.
The foregoing description is to be considered as illustrative merely as it will be apparent that the invention is capable oi' considerable modic-ation and adaptation withiny the spirit and scope of' the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
l; A hanger of the character described comprising a 'frame having a pair oi straight laterally spaced legs which incline inwardly toward each other toward t-he bottom adapted to admit freely between them the supporting rod Jfor said hanger, a single anti-friction bearing roller having the periphery thereof conformed to the contour of said rod to roll thereon7 a straight pin for said roller extending across the hanger between said legs and secured thereto to constitute a rigid brace for said trame and spacers on said pin for spacing said roller relatively to said iframe, said frame comprising a substantially U-shaped brace fastened on the inside. of the lower portion of said legs by a plurality of eyelets adapted to receive drapery securing means and having its arched portion extending across said frame over said roller and serving as a dust-guard therefor.
2. A duplex drapery hanger of the character described comprising a pair or' straight laterally spaced legs constituting the fra-me for said hanger open at the lower end so that said hanger may be placed astride the supporting-rod for the draperies, a single anti-:friction roller in said frame adapted to roll on said rod, a. straight pin serving as an axle for said roller and joining said legs to constitute a rigid brace there-tor, spacers Ator said roller to maintain said I ame in proper relation to the supporting rod, and a U-shaped brace for said iframe disposed below the upper ends of said legs and having its cross piece arched over said roller and acting as a dust-guard therefor.
'3. A duplex drapery hanger comprising an inverted U-brace 'formed oi Hat strip material and adapted for straddling a drapery rod, a pair of flat drapery-attaching strips fastened by their lower portions to the legs or' said U by eyelets to provide convenient openings to receive stitches for Jfastening draperies and having holes therein above said U tor a similar purpose, a. straight pin extending across the hanger between the legs of t-he U, and a single roller mounted thereon to turn but prevented from sidewise movement. said roller being annularly grooved in the middle thereoil to iit the drapery rod.
ln testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
`GLENN U. ANGEVINE.
