Be it known that l, HENRY W. FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to a novel clamp which is particularly adapted 'for securing wind deflectors to wind shields of auto-v mobiles or the like and which will adjust itself to supports of different sizes and configuration.
The device is porticularly suitable for use in connection with a glass wind deector supporting clamp of the character disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 376,853, filed April 26, 1920, but the device may be utilized in many other situations.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The clamp broadly consists of an angular plate 1, which is preferably cast with an elongated smooth opening, through which is inserted a threaded bolt 3. A washer 4 interposed between the underside of the on line bolt head and the outer surface of the plate 1 to take up wear. An adjusting bolt 5 is tapped 4through the plate 1 preferably at right angles to the bolt 3, and engages a threaded bore 6 in said plate.
The bolt 3 is preferably threaded into a socket 7 in a jaw 8 of the clamp, the jaw 8 being movable longitudinally of the plate 1 as shown.
The jaw 8 is preferably cast with an elongated opening 9, similar to the open- 1921. Serial No. 469,812.
ing l ,in plate 1, and a' bolt 10, threaded on its inner end, inserted through said opening and engaging a threaded bore in a jaw 11. A washer 12 is preferably interposed between the head of the bolt 10 and the outer face of the jaw 8 to take up wear when the bolt 16 is rocked in the opening 9. The head 17 of the jaw 8 may be provided with teeth or ribs 11 if desired.
Each of the. jaws 8 and 11 are provided near its lower inner end with opposite preferably semi-circular grooves 13 and 14 which engage any desired object, and which are shown as applied to a rod 15 attached to ya wind deflector so as to clamp said rod therebetween to permit rotation of the rod in the clamp, but to prevent longitudinal movement of said rod with respect to said clamp. When used in connection with a wind shield deflector two of the` clamps are ordinarily required for securing same in position.
rlt`he jaw 8 is provided on its inner face with an, inclined shoulder 16 as shown and with a bearing surface 17. The jaw 11 has an offset portion 18 and the plate 1 is provided with a flange 19. These bearing meinbers are adjustable to engage any desired object 20; the object shown being a fragment of a wind shield frame.
In operation the clamp is easily and quickly applied by loosening the bolt 10 and partially rotating the jaw 11 and adjusting the bolts 3 and 5 as desired rlhe clamp is then applied to the desired objects which it is desired to secure in position and 1kfatened by tightening the various adjusting o ts.
An important and practical feature of the clamp is its capacity for 'accommodating objects of different sizes, that is, instead lof engaging a large object between the plate 1 and the inner ends of jaws 8 and 11, and a smaller object between the outer jaws, the inner and outer jaws of the clamp will readily engage objects of large size in the inner jaws and of small size in the outer jaws, and vice versa, etc., and readily adjust itself to varying sizes of objects en- Gaged.
b It is also evident that the construction is such that the clamp may be large or small to suit different purposes but regardless of variations in size will adjust itself to the size of the objects engagedr The various mem- Cil bers of the clamp are preferably cast and the elongated openings are formed during the casting operation. i
When the device is in position and the adjusting bolt tightened the clamp provides a strong and reliable support. lt can be cheaply and quickly manufactured and provides a neat and eiiicient; and adjustable device.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations andmodiiications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is new `and desire to secure by Letters `Patent; is:-
l. A device of the character described comprising a base member; a clamping jaw longitudinally and perpendicularly adjustable with respect to said base member; andy a second jaw adjustablyconnected to said first jaw and cooperating with said base member to form a clamp.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base member; a clamping jaw longitudinally and perpendicularly adjust able with respect tosaid base member; a second jaw adjustably connected to said first jaw and cooperating with said base inember to form a clamp, the outer `ends of said jaws forming other clamping jaws.

A device of the character described comprisingl a base Amember having turned ends; there being a slot .in said base member; a memberl extending through said slot and 'having a jaw adjustablvconnected thereto therefbeing a slot in said jaw; means for adjustingsaid clamping jaw longitudina y of saidbase member.; a member mounted in saidfslot; and a second jaw adjustably counectedA to said member.

6. ln al device of the Character described comprising an angular supporting' member; an elongated aperture in said supporting member; a bolt extending through said aperture movable longitudinally with relation to said supporting ymember, said bolt having a head engaging the outer surface of said supporting member, and having threads on its j inner` end; a vthreaded bolt f tapped through said supporting member at an angle to saidv movable bolt; a jaw having a threaded socket engaged by the threaded end of said bolt; an elongated aperture in said jaw a bolt extending through said aperture and being movable longitudinally of said aw, havinga head engaging the outer face of said jaw; the inner end thereof being threaded; a second jaw having a threaded bore for the reception of the threaded end of said bolt; and gripping members at opposite ends of said jaws for adjustably engaging objects of the same or diderent sizes and shapes.
