IMPROVEMENT IN BURNISHERS FOR PHOTOGRAPHS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,161, dated December 2, 1873; application liled November 11, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. ENTREKIN, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Burnishing Presses for Photographs 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the aecompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view, Fig. 2 is a rear view, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, of the burnishenholder.
It is found that stationary burnishing-tools, such as that shown and described in a patent granted to Wm. G. Entrekiu and James Bramble, Jr., May 2U, 1873, No. 139,132, are objectionable inthe following particular: That, in the final washing of the pl1otog1a1 l1s, a iine deposit of sand is liable to remain upon the photograph, and that, if a particle of sand is caught upon a stationary burnishing-tool, it will scratch the remaining length of the card; but it is found that, if a slight side movement is given to the burnishingtool, the particle of sand is dislodged and embedded into the surface of the card, and no injury is donc. This compound motion also adds greatly to the finish and polish of the card, and insures also,to some extent, the pas sage of the card over the burnishingtool.
My invention, therefore, consists in combining with the motion given to the card by the feed-roll in burnishing photographs, or other material of a kindred nature, a transverse motion given to the burnishing-tool; second, )rovidin g the burnishingtool holder with a clamp .for clamping the steel burnisher, and also providin g it with a flange underneath to prevent the flame from reaching the card as it passes from the feed-roll and, lastly, providing the sides of the frame with pins to arrest the upward movement of the burnishing-tool in its adjustment, and prevent the injury of the polished burnisher by the roughened feed-roll.
In the drawing, A represents a frame, into which the roughened roll B and wedge-sl'iaped yoke C are placed, and operate substantially in the manner shown and described in Patent No. 139,132, before referred to, and need not be described here. D is the plate or burnisher holder, and is supported at one end and turns upon a vertical. pin, c, which passes through a hole countcrsui'ik from both sides, to give a vertical play to the opposite end, caused by the adjustment with the yoke C, upon which it rests. Of course, other means of pivoting the burnisher-holder may bc adopted. The flange cl, projecting from the bottom of the pia-te D,prevents the llame from the gas-jet G from reaching the burnished card as it leaves the burnisher. On the upper side of the plate D is another flange, and also a sliding plate, H, guided by pins 'i 1', operating into slots. By means of this iange and sliding. plate, the steel burnisher is easily clamped and heldin position. Upon the outer corner of the plate D is a pin, o, which enters a spiral groove, p, in the end of the Toughened roll B. As the roll revolves, a lateral oscillating motion is communicated to the burnishing-tool holder D,while the feed-roll feeds the card forward. A compound motion, therefore, acts upon the card.
Other means, of course, may be used to give the plate l) an oscillating motion, but I prefer the means shown.
It is clear that if the roughened roll should come in contact with the polished steel 'burnisher it would injure it. I therefore place pins s upon cach side of the frame A, which limit the motion of the burnisher-holder, and prevent its rising sufliciently to reach the feed-roll.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I clainnvand desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
l. A burnishing-macliine provided with an oscillating burnishing-tool anda feed-pressure mechanism, substantially as described, by which a polished surface is given to the ar ticle burnished.
2. The combination of an oscillating burnishing-tool with a friction feed-roll, substantially as described.
3. The plate D, provided with a clamping device, in combination with the removable burnisher ar, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the plate D, proA vided with the iiange d and the gasjet G, feed-roll B, and burnisher m, substantially as described. j
5. The combination of the feedroll B, oscillating burnisher w, and pins o with the adjusting apparatus, substantially as described.
