IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHERSCOURING MACHINES.
y Specification forming-part of Letters Patent No. 129,251, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD W. REID, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of NewYork, have invented certain Improvements in Leather-Scouring and Setting Machines, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention relates to those machines where the leather is placed over a proper support, having a curved face, and is polished or scoured by means of arotatingdisk or wheel hung on a shaft, with proper scouring or setting tools at intervals on its outer surface; and my invention consists in the combination of devices forming the support for the leather and giving the proper curve to the face, and bringing the leather nearer the wheel at its lower part, as will be hereinafter described, and also in the devices for controlling the same.
Description ofthe Accompanying Drawing.
Figure l is a perspective view of a leatherscouring and setting machine,77 as improved. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the support for the leather, separate from the machine, face toward the wheel. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the same from behind; Fig. 5, section of table.
Like letters refer to like or corresponding parts.
General Description.
A represents the rotatingfwheel or disk on a shaft, B, and having the scouring or setting tools or devices at G. The disk, shaft, and devices (C) are old. At E is shown the support. This I construct usually in shape as shown in Figs. 3 and 4;, having a propercurved face towards the disk A, and at F I have hinged thereto a plate of metal, also having a curved face, about as shown. 'Ihe plate is marked G, and atv H I have a clamp or its equivalent, having a screw at I for regulating the pressure against the scouring or setting tools or devices on the disk A, and at J I have rubber or other suitable spring, against which the plate Gr rests 5 and at K I have a thumb-screw to regulate the bearing.`
On the face of this plate G I have curved wood, also forming a plate, marked L, properly secured to the plate Gr at its upper and lower edges, curved to correspond and fitted closely thereto. The arrangement is such that, should the setting or scouring tools bind and press heavily against the leather, the plates G and L may spring sufficiently to prevent injury to the leather, and the devices also admit of .properly and readily regulating the pressure, as desirable. The interior face before' mentioned as composed of wood may be constructed of any suitable metal, if desired, and all the oth er parts may be formed of any metal or material suitable for their purpose. The support or standard E has a spreading foot, as shown at M, and this rests on a foundation marked N, and the whole is then secured to the platform by the screws O and P. Between the foot M and foundation N is a projection from the foot M downward, and this strikes the top surface of the foundation N, or it may fit in a groove thereon. The object of this arrangement is so that by means ofthe screws O and P .the support may be slanted forward and backward as desired, and slots are left in the foot M through which the screws O and P pass, which will admit of the support E being pressed nearer the disk A, or further off, as most suitable, thus admitting of very precise regulation. At the top of the support E is shown a plate or board marked It. old; but I place another above this, having rollers between the two, so that the upper board or plate S-may have motion from side to side of the machina The board or plate S is the table over which the leather is placed This is plate G and support E, substantially as and for the purpose described and Set forth.
3. The table S, in combination with the plate or board R, substantially as and for the purpose described and set forth.
4. The foot M, in combination with the support E and foundation N, substantially in manner und for the purpose as described and set forth.
ARCHIBALD W. REID.
