MARKING TICKET.
i Application ined-Augusta, 1222. seriaino. 579,439.
To all whom t may concern: n
-Be it known that l, ALoNzo 'KiMBALL MARSH, a citizen' ofl the United States, and resident of yNew York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Marking Tickets, o f which the following description,'in connection .with the accompanyingdrawing5 is a'speciiicadrawing representing like-parts.
This invention has for its object the provision of a pinless marking ticket .which canbe readily and firmly secured inposition on the article or articles to be marked particularly when the said article er articles present a substantial bulk or thickness.
The object of the invention is to provide a marking ticket which may be used without the slightest danger of injury to the most delicate fabrics or articles and which shall remain securely in position without danger of accidental'removeinent or displacement.
The object of the invention is V-further yto provide such a marking ticket of a construction sucli that it may readily be adjusted to articles of varying sizes.
These and other objects .and features of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings particularly pointed out inthe claims. l p
In the drawings; AFig. l is a. View in perspective of a portion of la, bundle of articles such asrneckties with a preferred form of markingl ticket embodying the invention iii position thereon;
Fig. 2 is a plaiiview of a inarkin ticket such as shown in Fig. l and embo ying a preferred form of kthe invention;r Fig. 3 and 4 are plan views of slightly dif-` y ferenty form of the ticket; and
Fig. is an end elevation of a ticket such as shown in Figs. l and 2 whengbent into its marking position. l
The marking ticket of this invention is capable of a wide application of use whereever, in particular, it is desired to mark with suitable indicia, such as price, size, style,
etc., etc.,v one or more articles'` of substantial thickness or bulk.` The marking ticket of this invention is of the general type vdis' closed in the patent to Wallin 1,073,828 of:
September 23, 1913. The body of the ticket comprises ka plurality ofv plies ofy flexible,
sible, 'ener of the marking ticket unless the inark- L ably ing the linarking ticket in place. Sucha ticket is entirely satisfactory for ra wide range of use but when the article or articles to be marked are of substantial thickness or bulk, such for example as a bunch of neckties, a marking ticket such as disclosed in the Wallin patent is likely to become separated from the article or articles to which it has been attached. This'is chiefly due to theffact that it is difficult, `if Vnot imposto give a permanent set to the stiliing ticket with the interposed wire stiffener Lbe bent sharply back upon itself which may be readily done in the case of comparatively thin articles or thin packagesl such as a few layers of fabric. y
The present invention provides a marking ticket lso constructed as entirely to surround the article er articles to be marked and to be held securely in place by tongue and slot 'engaging means forming a part of the marking ticket itself.
A simple and preferred forni of the invention illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and.
As tliereshown the body of the ticket is ofv general rectangular form and comprises two plies or layers l and 2 of thin cardboard or thick paper, but as pointed outany number of plies or layers may be employed and any suitable flexible noninetallic material may be employed.
A wire stiffener 3 by y being bent is interposed between the plies, as between they plies l andv 2, and
yextends longitudinally of the ticket preferin a straight line and centrally of the body. This stiifener is preferably made of a soft vwire such as employed in this type of ticket and which retains a` permanent set when it is bent or doubled back upon itself. A stiffener of this character when bent sharply and pressed back upon itself will clamp or pinch comparatively thin articles and retain its yposition thereon. But when it is bent in a wide curve or a wide angle it `will not firmly clasp and hold them.'
This invention, therefore, provides suitable ineans tor holding the ends ot the ticket embodying the Wire sti'ener in place When the-ticket is Wrapped around thick articles or a bundle Of thin articles. For that purpose the body of the marking ticket presents adjacent one end a transversely elongated aperture 4 preferably orined centrally ont' the ticket and at vthe opposite end a tongue 5 containing the end ot' the WireA stifener and, therefore, preferably formed centrally of the ticket. y Y
rlhe tongue 5 at itsbase 6 preferably lies within, and is separated by slots 7 from, the
body ofthe ticket `and preferably also the tongue projects beyond, the body ot the yticket as illustrated.
The body ot the tickel presents a spacey i of a size depending upon the Width ot the ticket upon which suitable indicia, such as grade, style, sise, price and other niarks may be printed Vor placed.
The ticket iswvrapped `around the article or bundle of articles to be marked, the Wire stiil'ener being'bent as it is thus Wrapped around the articles and the end ot the tongue is ,passed through the aperture 4 and bent back sharply upon itselt as shown in `l"ig. l thusv holding the marking ticket firmly and securely 1n place, the slots '7 enabling the ends of' the body of the ticket to overlap When the ticket is in vmarking position as-illustrated in Fig. l. The length of the tongue,y which preferably is substantiah' enables the ticket to be adjusted to the size of the article or articles' about which it is Wrapped and a further adjustinentyenabling the effective surrounding length ot the ticket to be Varied, is provided by forming a plurality of apertures at the opposite end oi the lticket. @ne such additional aperture is indicated at 8.
The general shape and construction of the .ticket may be varied considerably. Il: desired transversescores or depressions as indicated at y9k in Fig. 3 may be provided to enable the ticket readily to be bent into rectangulai forni and to position the display tace of the ticketfrvhere appear the suitable indicia. cio als'oas shown in Fig. s@ a plurality of symmetrically situated apertures it), tongues ll and stiiening wires l2 inay be employed. The number, position and shape of' theapertu'r'es may be varied and the apertures inay extend through the side edges o' the tickets-enabling the tongues to be placed therein )from the edges.
Having ythus described iny intention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters PatentJ is:
l. A inarking'ticket comprising two plies oif'iieilible' non-metallic material secured together face to ace, a sott Wire stitener in- 'terposed between said plies and extending arated by slits from7 the body of the ticket thus enabling the ends of the ticket to overlap `-when ininai'king position.
3. A ymarking ticket comprising the construction delined in claim l in Which the ticket presents a plurality ot the said apertures arranged at different distances from the end whereby the e'ective surrounding length of the ticket may be varied according vas the tongue is passed through one or another of said apertures.
In testimony whereof, have signed my naine to this specification;
