Description

H. MOREY.
Machines for-Bu|ding Earth-Works.
No, 145,119, Patented DecA2,18v73,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY MOREY, OE CAMERON, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BUILDING EARTH-WORKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,119, dated December 2, 1873; application led July 26, 1573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HARVEY MoREv, of Cameron, in the county of Milam and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Grading-Machine, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of a strong frame, mounted on casters or wheels, for moving along the ground readily, and having an elevated platform hinged at one side, and held down at the A other side upon powerful springs, onto which the earth is scraped up an ascending way, or otherwise delivered upon it, and then discharged in the direction of the place where it is to be spread by tripping the ,platform and allowing the springs to throw it up with great force, and project the earth from it. A windlass is employed for forcing the platform back again for reloading, with ratchets and pawls for holding it.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved grading-machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view with a part broken out; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line m :v of Fig. l.
Ais a strong frame, mounted on four wheels, B, and having a strong platform, C, on the top, hinged to the frame at one side, D, and bearing at the other side on one or more strong springs, E, which throw the platform up, as represented in Fig. 3, when it is let free. F is a windlass, mounted on one side of the machine, and connected to the platform by ropes t G for putting it down against the springs. H is a bolt, and I a lever, for fasteningrthe platform down, and tripping it to discharge the earth from it. J represents the lever for turning the windlass; K, the ratchets; and L, the pawls for holding the windlass. The ropes are unhooked from the platform after it is secured by the bolt and lever, and hooked in again when the platform is to be pulled back. M is an ascending way, up which the earth scraped up, in an ordinary scraper, is drawn by mules or other means to be delivered on the platform. This way is detachably connected to the frame, and it is provided with steps or cleats N to aid the mules in ascending it.
This machine is more particularly designed for levee building, and it is believed will be found very serviceable in building up banks of considerable height, by saving much ofthe labor of the animals in moving themselves and the scrapers up and down the banks.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a swinging platform, C, springs E, windlass F, and a fastening and tripping device on an elevated platform, A,
substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the ascending way M with a frame, platform, and springs, substantially as specified.
HARVEY MOREY.
