To all w hom t may concern Be it knownthat l. GEORGE F. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oronogo, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certa-in new and useful improvements in Hydrocarbon-Uil Burners; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to burners for utilizing oil as fuel, the same being atomi/Zed by a fluid medium in the form of a jet, steam being preferred since it heats the oil and its pressure is utilized both as feeding and atomizing means for the fuel.
The invention insures a positive feed of the oil by creating a suction on the supply and the fluid medium, air or steam, both heats and atomizes the oil, the mixture after combining being" agitated to further the atomization by a stationary spiral removabl fitted in the burner tip.

The burner comprises a body 1 which is elongated and of cylindrical form. The delivery end of the body 1 has a tapered portion 2 and .a contracted portion 2@L which is externally and internally screw threaded. A head 3 is threaded to the receiving end of the body and has an axial opening 3 and a nipple 4 in line with said opening. A tube 5, centrally disposed within the body 1, is threaded to the nipple 4 and its delivery end 5a is made conical and formed with a rela.-
tively small opening 6 constituting an outthe tube 5 and is adapted to close the outlet 6 or control the fluid outflow therethrough.
An oil pipe 8 connects with a side of the body 1 near the head 3 and supplies fuel to the burner. A short tube 9 is threaded within the contracted end 2a of the body 1 and constitutes a regulator. The tube 9 is adjustable to admit ofthe distance between its inner end and the' delivery end of the tube 5 varying as required. A gland or nut 10, threaded on the contracted end 2a of the body 1, serves as means for securing a tight joint between the regulator 9 and the body 1. The inner end of the tube 9 is flared, as indicated at 9a, to correspond with the conical end 5a of the tube 5 to insure a tight joint when the tube 9 is moved in to shut off' the supply of fuel. The tube 9 is enlarged and provided with pins 13 to enable a firm and positive grip being obtained on the tube when turning the same to shut off the fuel or regulate the supply thereo-f to the burner. A tube 11 is coupled to the regulator 9 and the latter has a polygonal portion 12 at its outer end to receive a wrench or Spanner whereby to hold the part 9 stationary when screwing the part 11 there to. A tip 14: is connected to the outer end of the tube 11 by means of a coupling 23 and has an outlet 15 for the fuel. The outlet 15 is flared to effect delivery of the fuel I in a spray or mist. The opening of the tip 1/-1 adjacent the outlet 15 is contracted to form an inner shoulder 16 which constitutes a stop to limit the forward movement of a stationary spiral 17 removably fitted within the tip 14 and designed to impart a whirling movement to the fuel to further assist vaporization thereof.
The liquid fuel or oil is supplied to the body 1 by means of the pipe 8 and surrounds the tube 5. The steam or other fluid medium is admitted to the body of the burner by means of the pipe 7 and passed through the tube 5 and escapes therefrom through the outlet 6 in the form of a jet. The oil surrounding the tube 5 is heated and caused to flow freely and is more readily atomzed when commingling with the jet of steam at the contracted delivery end 2 of the vbody 1. It is also observed that the jet of steam materially assists the feeding of the oil to the body 1 by the tendency to create a suction therein in a manner well understood. The delivery of the fuel may be regulated by moving the part 9 in or out thereby varying the space between the faces 5 and 9 throughwhich the oil passes from the body 1 to the part 9. lVhen adjusting the part 9 it is rot-ated by means of the pins 13. The atomized oil and steam pass through the tube 11 into the tip 14 and out through the opening 15, a whirling motion being imparted thereto by means of the spiral 17 whereby a thorough admixture of the oil -and steam is effected and vaporization of the fuel further assisted by the breaking up of any particles not atomized. By pro-per adjustment of the valve 20 the supply of steam or other fluid medium maybe regulated or cut ofi' as required.
What is claimed is 1. An oil burner comprising an elongated body having its delivery end contracted and a tapered portion adjacent the contracted end, and having a fuel inlet at its opposite end, a head fitted to the receiving end of the body, a tube within the body and spaced therefrom and attached at one end to said head, and having a jet outlet at its opposite end terminating Within the tapered portion of the body, means for supplying steam to said tube, a valve within the tube, and a regulator threaded to the contracted end of the body and adapted to coact with the jet outlet end of the said tube to regulate the flow of the fuel through the body.
2. An oil burner comprising an elongated body having its delivery end contracted and internally and externally screw threaded, and having a tapered portion adjacent the contracted end, said body having a fuel inlet at its opposite end, a. head applied to the receiving end of the body, a tube carried by said head and disposed within the body and terminating in a conical jet outlet within the tapered portion of the body, a. fitting, carried by said head and having a lateral inlet l'or a fluid medium, a valve threaded to said iitting and adapted to control the jet outlet of said tube, a regulator threaded within the contracted end of the body and coacting with the conical jet outlet of the jet tube, and a gland threaded upon the contracted end of the body.
