To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, Tnnonon BERGMANN, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Gaggenau, German Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Machine Pistol (for which I have filed applications for patents in Germany, Nos. B. 85958XI/79h, filed December 29, 1917; B. 86209-XI/79h, filed April 25, 1918; B. 87575-XI/79h, filed October 9, 1918), for which the following is a. specification.
The invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in automatic machine pistols and has for its objects to provide an improved machine pistol which shall be simple, strong and durable in construction and reliable in operation, to provide an improved breech action.
Other objects of the invention relate to the provision of minor parts cooperating with the elements breech mechanism and to details of construction, all of which will be more clearly set forth in the following specification.
With the above objects in view the invention resides in the parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the claims appended hereto.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 shows in a .diagrammatical manner a side elevation of the pistol parts being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a section on the axis of the barrel.
Fig. 3 is a top view.
The pistol shown in Fig. 1 to 3 comprises a breech frame 1 the fore part 1' of which forms a mantle around the barrel 3. The barrel 3 is connected to the mantle by means of nut 4 and sleeve 5. In the breech frame 1 the cylindrical breech bolt 2 .is slidably mounted said bolt 2- being comparatively heavy. In the sliding breech bolt the firing pin 6 is slidably mounted. The hind end of the firing pin 6 is provided with a bore, in said bore the end of a coiled spring 7 projects the otherl end of which abuts against a plate 8 on the bottom 16 of the breech frame. Near the cartridge chamber 3 of the barrel 3 a sleeve 9 is mounted on the barrel 3 having a socket 10 through which the cartridges are fed into the barrel 3. On the breech bolt 2 there is mounted a cartridge extractor which ejects the fired cartridges through an opening 12 of the sleeve 9. The sleeve 9 is provided with downwardl nected to the stock 15 by means of a bolt 13 passing through said lugs and through lugs 14 on the stock 15. By these means the breech frame 1 with the barrel mantle 1 and the breech mechanism is hinged to the stock 15. To secure the breech frame on the stock the plate 8 is provided witha prolongation 17 passing through a bore of the bottom 16 of the breech frame 1. On the portion 17 a locking piece 18 is fixed. The plate 8 and therewith the-locking piece 18 stands under the action of spring 7 which projecting lugs. The breech bolt 2 1s provided with a lever 22, projecting through a slot 21 of the breech frame 1 by means of which the bolt 2 may be moved against the action of spring 7 The slot 21 1s provided with an extension 23 at its hind end into which the lever 22 is pushed if the breech bolt is to be secured. In this position the breech bolt is securely held by the said spring 7. v 1
The machine pistol works as follows:
The cartridges are fed by means of springs -(not shown in the drawing) through the channel 10 into the sleeve 9 and the breech bolt 2 pushes the cartridges one by one into the chamber 3 of the barrel 3 and the point of the'firing pin 6 strikes against the cartrid e which is fired. The recoil of the fire cartridge case is transferred to the breech bolt 2 which by means of an extractor (not shown in the drawing) ejects the fired cartridge case through the opening 12. The breech bolt 2 is moved by the recoilof the cartridge case against the action of the spring 7 which after having been compressed expands again and throws the breech bolt again forward pushin a cartridge into its position to be fired. s long as the trigger 24 is drawn the breech bolt 2 plays in the aforesaid manner until the cartridge magazine is emptied. By freeing the trigger 24 the breech bolt is arrested in its hind position with the spring 7 compressed. The means for catching and locking the bolt 2 in this position are not shown in the drawing and may be made in any suitable manner. 'As the breech bolt 2-is loosely mounted a cartridge may be removed out of the cham- I her 3 without being fired by moving the bolt slowly and carefully forward until the extractor catches the cartridge and ejects the same the firing pin yielding thereby without firing the cartridge.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the invention I wish to point out that various changes of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A machine pistol comprising in' combination a stock, a barrel, a breech frame, a breech bolt a trigger mechanism, a firing pin loosely mounted in said breech bolt and the front end of which projects from the front end of said bolt, a spring acting directly on said in and hence also on said breech bolt to t row said bolt and pin into. firing position after each recoil, a sleeve fixed to said breech frame and having a channel through which to feed cartridges into the barrel, and also having an opening to eject the spent cartridges.

3.
