Thus it is seen that there is a link 9 on each side of the shank 1, slide, and handle 7, and that said slide is actuated up and down, through the medium of said links, when the pin 8 is in place between two of the teeth 3 and said handle is rocked and as it moves up and down with an oscillatory or swinging motion on said pin.
The upper, pointed end of the pin 4 is designed to enter the center hole' in a valve, while the fork 6 is designed to engage a washer or other member on the valve-stem above the spring thereon.
In assemblingl the parts, after the different members of the slide have been connected or fastened together, andthe links 9 have been pivotally connected with said slide and with the handle 7, the slide is slipped on over the top of the shank 1, with the fork 6 extending rearwardly and the handle 7 in front.V The device is now ready to be adjusted for use. Adjustment is`V effected by moving the slide up or down on said shank, as and to whatever extent may be necessary in order to permit the pivot 8 to be engaged with the required tooth 3, that is to say, with the tooth that will locate the handle 7, the

The handle 7 at this time is moved from the full-line positionY to and through the broken-line position shown in Fig. 2,' and may be swung downwardly and rearwardly far enough Vto carry the central longitudinal plane common to the links 9 behind and below the pin 8, so that the handle and connected parts operated thereby are locked, andv remain locked until said handle Vis swung forwardly and upwardly to an extent which carries the 'aforesaid plane of the links 9f'forward of and above'rsaid pin, so that the parts are unlocked,
While the valve-spring is under compression, the pin which confines the lsame in place above the valve is taken out, thereby making` it possible to remove said spring after taking away the compressor. Before taking away the compressor it is necessary, of course, to swing the handle 7 upwardly and elevate the slide to an extent suflicient to release the spring. lVhen it is desired to replace the spring, the compressor is employed to compress the same while the pin is inserted in the valvestem, and then said spring is released to the restraint afforded by said pin, the operation of the compressor being the same in this as in the first case.
It has not been deemed necessary to en cumber this application with illustrations of a valve and its spring, together with the other closely connected or associated parts and members, because the application and operation of my compressor will be sufficiently well understood without such illustrations.
At 16-16 in Fig. 1 are represented two i compressor herein shown and described may be Vmade without departing from the spirit of my invention or exceeding the scope of what is claimed, I am aware that serrated bars, slides, and operating handles have been variously combined and used before for the ,i
purpose of compressing valve springs, and do not, therefore, seek to claim such a combination broadly.
l/Vhat'l do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
V1. The combination,` in a valve-spring compressor, with a serrated shank having an angular extension which is provided with an engaging member for a valve, of a slide mounted on said shank and having -a fork to engage a valve spring, an operating handlel provided with anon-oscillatory engaging member to contact with said shank, connecting means between said handle and slide, whereby the handle may be moved independently of the slide, said engaging member being the only medium of direct connection between the handle and shank, and capable of entering-any of the serrations of the shank, and said connecting;
means 'being connected with said handle forward of said engaging member.
v2. The combination, in a lvalve-spring compressor, with a shank having teeth formed' on its front edge and a rearward extension at the base, such extension being provided with an engaging member for a said handle.
3. The combination, in a valve-spring compressor, with a shank having teeth on its front edge and an angular extension at the base, said base being provided with means to engage a valve, of a slide consisting of bars to engage the front and rear edges of said shank, one of said jaws having a member to engage a spring, and of side plates embracing the sides of said shank and secured at their terminals to said bars, a handle having a pivot adapted to engage any of said teeth, and links having their upper or rear terminals pivotally connected with said slide and their lower or forward terminals pvotally connected with said hand-le.
