E. A. ADAMS WINDOW BOARD Filed Feb. 28, 1922 I attouwq Patented Apr. 3, 1923.
UNHTED STATES PATENT orrlcaj WINDOW BOARD.
Application filed February 28, 1922. Serial No. 539,830.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD A. ADAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trumansburg, in the county of Tompkins, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Window Board; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to window boards and has for its object to provide a window board comprising vertically disposed plates telescopically engaged at their upper ends, said plates being provided with clamping brackets which may be easily and quickly attached to a window sill for holding the board in position, where it will deflect air upwardly when the lower sash of the window is raised.
A further object is to provide each section of the device with a bracket extending downwardly and adapted to engage over the inner side of the window sill and another bracket extending downwardly from adjacent the upper side of each section and into engagement with the window sill, thence outwardly and downwardly into engagement with the outer side of the window sill and formed of spring material. Each of said last named brackets is provided with adjusting screws extending through the section of the device to which it is secured, and forming means whereby the deflecting device as a whole may be securely clamped to a window sill. Also to provide means whereby the device mlay be attached to various widths of window si ls.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter, set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the lower portion of a window frame from the interior of a room, showing the deflecting device attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the wind deflecting device, which device comprises two sections 2 and 3. The sections 2 and 3 are telescopically engaged at their upper and lower edges 42 and their lower edges rest on the upper face 5 of the window sill 6. By forming the deflecting device 1 in two sections, it is obvious that the device may be lengthened or shortened as desired according to the width of the window frame opening 7 Secured to the inner'faces of the deflector sections 2 and 3 at 8 are downwardly extending sill engaging brackets 9. Brackets: 9 are provided with offset U-shaped portions 10, which engage the inner side 11 of the sill 6, and prevent outward movement of the deflecting device. Secured to the rear faces of the deflector sections 2 and 3 adjacent their upper ends, by means of the upper securing means 8, are downwardly extending spring arms 12, which arms have secured thereto adjacent their lower ends right angled members 13, the arms 14: of which are provided with elongated slots 15 and extend outwardly in substantially the same plane as the upper side 5 of the sill. The upwardly extending arms of the right angled members 13 stiffen the lower ends of the arms 12 and prevent excessive bending of the lower ends of the arms 12 when the thumb nuts 16 are tightened on the bolts 17, which bolts extend throu h the spring arms 12, the upwardly extending arms of the right angled members 13, the deflector sections 2 and 3 and the brackets 9. Adjustably connected to the outwardly extending arms 14 of the adjustable brackets 13 are right angled sill engaging members 18, which members engage over the outer side 19 of the sill 6, and when the thumb nuts 16 are tightened hold the device as a whole securely clamped on the sill 6. By providing the adjustable connection 20 between the right angled members 18 and the right angled members 13, it will be seen that the device may be adjusted for difl'erent widths of window sills.
From the above it will be seen that a wind deflecting device is provided for; window sills, which may be easily and quickly adjusted for dilferent widths and lengths of sills and the device when the lower sash 21 is raised, will deflect the air upwardly and into the room.
The invention having been set forth what 1 comprising slidably engaged vertically disposed deflecting memberseach of said deflecting members having secured to its outer face a downwardly extending bracket adapted to engage the inner side of the window sill, downwardly extending spring arms secured to the outer faces of the deflecting members from a point adjacent their upper sides, right angled members connected to the lower ends of said spring arms, right angled sill engaging members adjustably connected to the right angled members carried by the spring arms and adapted to EDVARD A. ADAMS. Nitnesses P. F. SEARs, A. S. WILLrAMs.
