Description
Patented Apr. 3, 1923.
renee CHARLES W'. HARVEY, OF EAST LYME, CONNECTICUT.
CLIPPING MACHINE.
Application filed .Tune 24, 1921.
T 0 alt whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES IV. HARVEY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at East Lyme, in the countyv of New London, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Clipping Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rIlhe invention relates to clipping machines and has for its object to provide a clippingV machine particularly of the type used for clipping hair and so constructed that the same will be operated through the medium of a spring motor, thereby obviating the manual operation of hair clippers as at present constructed.
A further object is to provide a hair clipping machine comprising a casing having rotatably mounted therein a spring actuated operating shaft, a toothed wheel carried by said shaft, with which wheel a spring actuated detent cooperates. Also to provide fan means and spring actuated means for retarding the rotation of the shaft and the cutting element during a hair clipping operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimedl without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the clipping machine.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through-the clipping machine, taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a cylindrical handle member and 2 the removable cap carried thereby. The forward end of the handle member 1 is lprovided with a tapered portion 3 and ex- Serial No. 480,024.
one of its ends is rotatably# mounted in a bearing 7, and its other end is rotatably mounted in a bearing 8 of the removable cap 2. Surrounding the shaft 6 is a spiral spring 9, one end of which is anchored at 10 in the removable cap 2 and the other end anchored at 11 in a ratchet wheel 12. Pivoted at 13 to a casing 1 and extending through an aperture 14 therein is a spring actuated dog 15, which dog holds the ratchet wheel 12 against retrograde movement when the coiled spring 9 is tensioned by rotating the shaft 6 through the medium of the inger,
rIlhe forward end of the casing 1 terminates in spaced flanges 17 and 18, which flanges are in parallel relation to each other,
and secured to the ange 18 is a plate 19 having stationary fingers 20, which fingers form cutter bars for shearing hair as the knife fingers 21 carried by the knife blades 22 are moved transversely over the plate 19. Knife blade 22 is provided with a vertically disposed slot 23 in which is mounted a slidable bearing block 24:, and with which slidable bearingV block the crank 25 of the shaft 6 engages. It will be seen that as the shaft 6 rotates the knife blade 22 will be reciprocated thereby causing its cutter fingers 21 to reciprocate across the fingers 2() of the plate 19, and against which fingers the hairs are sheared.
In operation the operator when he desires to reciprocate knife blade 22 presses downwardly on the spring actuated pawl 15.
Knife blade 22 is provided with an upwardly extending ange 26, which is guided in a transversely disposed slot 27 in the Hangs 17. However, it has been found that to prevent a too rapid reciprocation of the 1knife blade 22 that retarding means must be provided for the shaft 6 and the blade 22. To accomplish this result the shaft 6 is provided with fan blades 28, which when rapidly rotated act upon the air and retard the rotation of the shaft to a certain extent. However to additionally retard said rotation i leef spring 29 is disposed in a trensversely disposed slot of the knife blade und is bowed upwardly. Spring; 29 is upwardly bowed and the frietioneil engagement of the ends thereof with the bottoni of the groove 50 are regulated by the adjusting screw 31 in such :i manner that the reoiproeation of the knife blade 22 may be inoreiised or rew duced in speed as desired.
llroni the above it will be seen that a hair dipping machine is provided which is siniple in eonstrnotion sind one `wherein the cutting blade is reriprooated through the inodiuin of e coiled tensioned spring. Also het seid -oiled tensioned sprin(T muy be controlled :is desired for reciprocating the cutting knife.
The invention having been set forth what Claimed :is new and useful is A Clippingv nini-hine comprising a easing, i; finger bar secured to the forward end of the easing, :i Hnge Carried by the easing and overlying` said finger bar and provided with ai transversely disposed slot, o, knife blade disposed on the linger ber and heving i tongue and groove lconnection therewith, a. transversely disposed rib carried by the knife blade and disposed in the transversely disposed slot of the overlying flange, a drive shaft, a crank pin connection between the shaft and the rear end of the knife blade, a transversely disposed bor-fed leaf spring di, posed `in o transversely disposed slot in the knife blade, and in adjusting` serew extendthrough the overlying` flange 4und forining` ineens whereby the fictional engagenient of the' bowed leaf spring may be varied.
In testimony whereof .l have signed my naine to this speeiieation in the presence of tivo subscribing Witnesses;
CHARLES lV. HARVY.
