. U l T E D S T DANIEL E. RABER, OF PERRY, IOWA.
DRAFT REGULATOR AND CHIIVINEY CLEANER.
Application filed September 12, 1922.
To (zZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. RABER a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Perry, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented a. certain new and useful Draft Regulator and Chimney Cleaner, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of simple, durable and inexpensive construction that may be used in connection with a furnace or stove and applied to the bottom part of a. chimney for the joint purpose of regulating furnace draft and preventing the formation of soot within or the discharge of soot from the chimney to which it is applied.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows a face view of a part of a chimney having my improvement applied thereto.
Figure 2 shows a sectional view of the same on the line 22 of Figure 1. In this Figure 2 the chimney is lengthened upwardly and shows the furnace pipe entering the chimney.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, my improvement comprises a rectangular frame 10 which may be made of cast iron and which has on its outer face a flange 11 to rest against the outer surface of the chimney bricks.
Projecting outwardly from the rectangular frame 10 are the side flanges 12 and a bottom flange 13, the outer faces of which are beveled or inclined downwardly and away from the chimney, as clearly shown in Figure 2.
The draft regulator door is indicated by the numeral 14, and is hinged to the support at its top by the hinges 15, which may be made in any ordinary manner, and said parts are so arranged that the dodr will by gravity rest firmly against the flanges 12 and 13 and form a relatively air tight joint.
Attached to the lower end of the door 1 1 is a chain 16, and obviously by pulling upwardly on this chain the door may be more or less opened.
Formed on the interior of the frame 10 and extending downwardly and inwardly Serial No. 587,663.
from the top of said frame is a deflector plate 17, which may be cast integral-with, the frame 10. I
The chimney is indicated by the numeral 18, and the furnace pipe by the numeral 19.
In practical use and assuming that the device is assembled as shown in the drawing, then all the products of combustion from the furnace pass into the chimney through the furnace pipe 19.
In the event that it is desired to check the draft of the furnace, the draft regulator door 14 may be opened which causes the air to rush in at the bottom of the chimney and flow past the end of the furnace pipe and thus cut off or retard the flow of the products of combustion through the furnace pipe in the chimney.
l/Vhen the furnace fire is burning vigor,- ously, and in the event that some soot is being discharged from it into the chimney, and in the event that the draft regulator was opened, then when the unburned air passing through the draft" regulator which strikes and mingles with the heated products of combustion from the furnace pipe, the soot in the products of combustion will be burned and the soot will not be discharged from the chimney.
l/Vhen the furnace fire is not burning vig orously and there is just a smoldering fire and the draft regulator is closed, then some soot is at times caused to drop b gravity to the bottom of the chimney. en my improved draft regulator is not used, the bottom of the chimney must be cleaned out from time to time to remove this deposit of soot.
By means of my improved deflector plate in the draft regulator, this soot that is thus deposited on thechimney is carried away and consumed, because the draft regulator is ordinarily opened only when there is a vigorous fire in "the furnace, and then a strong draft will enter through the draft regulator opening, and will strike upon the deflect-or plate and be inclined downwardly and inwardly toward the bottom of the chimney where it will stir up the deposit of soot and discharge it upwardly through the chimney and past the furnace pipe, and the heat from the furnace pipe will consume th soot thus cleaned out from the bottom of the chimney.
In actual use, I have observed that without my improved draft regulator, a large amount of soot was discharged from the chimney at times and large amounts of soot was deposited in the bottom of the chimney and had to be cleaned out from time to time. When my improved draft regulator was installed no soot was ever discharged from the top of the chimney, and after a considerable period of use the bottom of the chimney was found to be perfectly clear and free from soot the conditions otherwise being exactly the same as before my improved draft regulator was applied.
I claim as my invention:
An improved draft regulator and chimney cleaner comprising a frame designed to be inserted in a chimney near the bottom thereof said frame havin upon its outer face a flange extending downwardly and outwardly from the chimney, a door pivoted to the frame about the flange and designed to rest by gravity against the flange to close the opening, and a deflector on the interior of the frame extending downwardly and inwardly to direct air passing through the door opening downwardly toward the bottom of the chimney, for the purposes stated.
