UNITED STATES DAVID ALLEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ADJUSTABLE ARTICLE RECEIVER FOR VENDING MACHINES.
Application filed December 6, 1921. Serial No. 520,303.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Adjustable Article Receiver for Vending Machines, of
ing means for use in dispensing articles of,
different sizes.
Another object is to provide a simply constructed drum of this character having a readily changeable article holding and delivering chamber.
Another object is to provide an adjustable guard for use in connection with a drum of this character and having an ad justable drum locking member carried thereby.
With these and other objectsin view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a vending machine equipped with this improved carrier, parts being broken off for convenience in-illustration.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, with parts broken out to disclose members in the bottom of the machine.
Fig. t-is a detail transverse section of the drum and the locking means therefor, with the receiving or delivery chamber shown of a size to dispense a cigar, and with the locking mechanism shown in the position assumed when the cigar is being discharged.
Fig. 5 is a similar view with the drum shown engaged. by the locking mechanism which occurs when no article is carried in the delivery chamber.
Fig. 6 is a similar view with the drum shown in normal position, and the receiving chamber adjusted to receive articles larger than a cigar, and,
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the delivery drum detached.
In the embodiment illustrated, a casing 1 of a vending machine is shown in the end wall 3 of which is rotatably mounted a hollow delivery drum 2. This drum 2 is preferably constructed of wood although obviously it may be of any other suitable material and as shown is crescent shaped in cross section and a transversely. curved sheet metal section 5 adjustably mounted circumferentially thereon as is shown clearly in Figs. 1, 4, 5 and 6. The sheet metal section 5 is slotted transversely as shown at 6 and is adjustably mounted on the drum proper by means of a screw 7 which extends through said slot 6 into the drum body and holds the shell or section 5 with its free end adjusted toward or away from the adjacent edge of the drum body the desired distance to form a receptacle or seat for the article to be vended.
A flexible covering 8 composed of any suitable material is designed to be wrapped around the drum and span the space between the free edge of the shelf 5 and the opposed edge of the drum body and said coveringis adapted to be extended into the drum between the edges to form a seat 9 for the article to be vended.
As shown the covering 8 is secured at one end to a metal strip 10 which is fixedly secured to the drum adjacent one of its free edges and the covering bridges the space between said edge and the opposed edge of the shell 5 and is. secured in adjusted position by any suitable means, a. button 11 being here shown for this purpose, the shank 12 of which extends through a longitudinally disposed slot 13 formed in the free end of the seat forming cover 8, as is shown clearly in Fig. 7.
From the above description, it will be obvious that the seat 9 may be varied by adjusting the shell 5 relatively to the body of the drum so that the opposed edges thereof will be closertogether or further away from each other according to the size of the seat to be formed and the article to be vended and that after'so adjusting the shell, the cover 8 will be correspondingly adjusted to increase or decrease the size of seat 9, Figures 1, 4 and 5 showing seat 9 of a size to receive and dispense a cigar C while Fig. 6 shows a larger size seat to accommodate an article of larger size to" be dispensed or vended.
To adjust the covering 8 to vary the size of seat 9, all that is necessary is to release the button 11 and draw the covering in one direction so as to decrease the size of the seat 9 or to loosen it and draw it in the other direction to increase the size of said seat. It will thus be seen that this improved dispensing drum may be easily adjusted for discharging articles of different sizes and yet is simple and cheap to manufacture.
To provide for the rotation of the drum 2 by a handle 14 outside the casing 1, a com controlled disk 16is connected with the hand grip ll; and with the drum so that when a coin of suitable size is inserted'in the chnte or slot 16, the handle and drum will be' connec ted so that the drum may be rotated to discharge the article contained in theseat which dropsonto an inclined delivery chute '17 from which it may be removed by the r r ha b' i A 'coiled spring 18 is connected with the drum 2 and with one wall of the casing 1 for returning the drum to normal position after the iarticle has been discharged therefrom.
, The supply shelves 3.9 and 20 for the drum 2 and the locking means for the drum are the sameasthose shown in my Patent No. 1,297,775, issued March 18,1919.
' Figs. 1 and 2 show the machine constructed to deliver cigars and consequently a vhumidor H is shown in connection therewith biit. obviouslythis may be omitted since it I isnot used except when cigars are to be f nd d- J The gist of this invention resides in the peculiarly constructed drum having the seat 9' adjiistahle for delivering articles of different sizes andthe coin controlled disk 15 may be of any desired fsize and adapted to" receive any desired coin according to the price of the article to be dispensed by the machine.
The preferred embodiinentof the inven- .7 tion disclosed in the drawingsand set forthlin the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications Within the scope of the claimed winventionina'y be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
