ormon PATENT \OFFICE.
SWITCH ACTUATOR.
Application filed July 16,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONROE GUErr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch Actuators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a switch-actuator.
Among the objects of the invention, is the provision of means which can be readily applied to an actuator without appreciable expense and by which the article can be easily distinguished. This distinction can be attained in a variety of difi'erentways generally by translucent means which is associated with-the actuator in such manner that it is transparent to an extent sufiicient to easily observe the substance back of the translucent body. This substance may be of any suitable character as something of luminous nature such as radium. It will be evident that I am not limited to the use of the actuator with any particular type of switch and the mass combined therewith need not be luminous because any substance Whether of powder or otherwise may be utilized.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification I have shown in detail one of the several forms of embodiment of the invention which will be set forth in detail in the following description. I am not restricted to such disclosure.
I may depart therefrom in a number of respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claims following said description.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of an actuator involving the invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same as seen for instance from the right in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Fig. 4 is adetail in section showing the upper portion of the body of the actuator and the disk inclosed by it, the-cap with its contained mass, being shown above the body.
Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
In electric switches there is found an actuator which is generally operated by hand and which may be any one of several forms.
1921. Serial No. 485,330.
In the drawings I have shownan actuator such as that ,denoted in a general way by 2 and whlch is adapted for connection with a rocking snap switch. This actuator as rep resented comprises a body 3 usually made of some insulating composition such as vulcanized rubber although any other proper material may be utilized. There is generally connected with the body 3 a shank as 4 which is customarily made of sheet brass being embedded in the body 3 and in practice being connected mechanically in some proper manner with the switch mechanism so as to bring about the action thereof. The construction thus far set forth is quite common in electric switches and is merely a broaddescription of a form of actuator in connection with which my improvemet effectively co-operates. In the top or upper portion of the body 3 of the actuator is a chamber 5 which receives within it the dished disk 6 having the upstanding marginal flange 7 which is embedded into the wall of the chamber 5 customarily, while the body 3 is in a somewhat plastic condition the upper edge of the flange 7 being upon a downward outward chamfer or bevel as at 8 to facilitate the connection of the dished disk with the body 3. c v
This dished disk as will be clear constitutes a suitable receptacle for a proper cap such as that denoted by 9 and also shown of dished disk formation the body of the cap 3 being of concavo convex form and receiving within its marginal flange 10 the mass 11 of powder which in the illustration given is assumed to be luminous paint although it might beany other proper substance. The powder 11 is held in the receptacle or disk 11 by the disk 12 generally of some paper stock and presents a receptacle or receiver for such u'rpose. The receptacle, cap or disk 9 is esirably of some translucent material such as celluloid which is sufficiently transparent to show the luminosity of the mass in the receiver or cap 9 provided such mass be luminous. The disk or receiver 9 fits closely in the receiver or disk 6 and while a fit as it is known might under ordinary conditions be sufficient to prevent the accidental separation of the receiver, cap or disk 9 I prefer to more positively hold the latter in place. For instance I may apply to other disk.
2'. An actuator for an electric switch comprising a body having a chamber, a dished disk molded into the chamber, and a dished disk of translucent material set into the other disk, the translucent ,,disk having an open bottom and furnished with a disk to close the open bottom. p
i 3. An actuator for an electric switch comprising a body having a chamber, a dished disk molded into the chamber, a dished disk of translucent material set into the other disk, the translucent disk having an open bottom and furnished with a disk to close the open bottom, and. a,shank molded into the body;
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa ure.
MONROE GUETT.
