UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. BRUCE, OF LANSDOVJNE, PENNYSLVANIA.
SYRINGE.
Application filed February 18, 1920.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. BRUCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident 0f Lansdowne, county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringes, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates particularly to that class of syringes in which the reservoir compri-ses a barrel having mounted therein a piston arranged to be reciprocated to charge the reservoir and to discharge its contents, and is especially directed to the form of piston employed.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a syringe with a piston arranged to deposit lubricant upon the inner walls of the barrel in which it reciprocates.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a. syringe with a piston having a lubricant-containing chamber, and to provide said piston with meansP for expelling the lubricant therein contained, f
My invention further comprehends a syringe having a piston comprising a lubricant-containing chamber, and provided with means to prevent the escape of said lubricant during sterilization. I
The form of my invention as hereinafter described comprises a syringe having a cylindrical barrel provided with a nozzle, and a hollow piston whose stem or rod projects exterior to said barrel, by which it may be conveniently reciprocated in a well known manner, said piston being provided with a follower in the chamber thereof, mounted to ride upon a threaded sleeve which is rotatablel to axially progress it in the direction to force lubricant from said chamber through suitably disposed controllable outlets opening upon the inner walls of said barrel.
My invention also includes all of the va-A rious novel features of construction and arrangement as hereinafter more definitely described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of a syringe conveniently embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of said syringe taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of said syringe taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1; and Fig. el is a trans- Serial No. 359,635.
verse sectional view of said syringe taken on the line lf-4 in Fig. l.
In said figures, the syringe reservoir or barrel comprises the cylindrical shell 1 and heads 2 and 3, the head 2 having the stem aperture 5 and the head 3 having the passageway 6 opening through the nozzle 7.
rfhe reservoir or barrel may be charged and discharged by the hollow plunger or piston 9 arranged to be reciprocated therein by the stem or rod 10 extending through and exterior to the head 2 and terminating in the handle or knob 11. Said piston 9 may preferably be cup-shaped, as shown in Fig. 1, to form the chamber 12 for lubricant such as grease, which is retained therein by the cap or closure 13 having the distributing outlets 15 through which said lubricant may discharge on to the inner surface of the shell 1 The lubricant in the chamber 12 may bey maintained under slight pressure by the follower disk 16 which is mounted for axial movement in said chamber upon the rotatable sleeve 17 with which it is engaged in threaded relation, being prevented 'from rotating therewith by the spline or feather 19, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Thefsleeve 17 rotatably embraces the stem or rod 10 and extends through the head 2, having the nut 2O by which it may be conveniently rotated to effect the axial adjustment of the follower 16, and being itself prevented from axial displacement by the flange 21 and collar 22 respectively engaging the opposite sides of the cap or closure 13, as shown in Fig. 1.
rlhe cap or closure 13, as shown in Fig. 1,is
.in theaded engagement with the cylindrical walls of the cup-shaped body of the piston 9, the threaded portion being limited to the inner peripheral region, while the outer peripheral region is smooth and snugly lits the free outer margin of the cylindrical walls of said piston 9 comprising the annular flange 25 through which apertures or ports 26 extend normally in registry with the outlets 15, see Figs. 1 and 3, but capable of being shifted out of registry by a relative rotation of said piston body 9 and its cap or closure 13.
It will be obvious that the shifting of the piston body 9 and its cap 13 to close the ports 26, of the outlets 15 is highly advantageous as it so seals the lubricant-containing chamber 12 as to prevent escape of the lubricant during the process of sterilizing the syringe piston.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the precise details of construction and arrangement as herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the.
essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A hollow piston having a chamber for containing lubricant, and mechanism within said piston arranged to be actuated independently of the actuation of said piston, to effect the discharge of said lubricant.
2. A hollow piston movable within a casing and having a chamber for containing lubricant, a followerl for said lubricant, and means operable without said reservoir for effecting the movement of said follower to compress said lubricant.
3. A hollow piston mounted to reciprocate in a casing and having a chamber provided with outlets, for containing lubricant, a rod for said piston extended through and exterior to said casing, a follower for said lubricant, and a sleeve embracing said rod, in threaded engagement with said follower and operable from without said casing to effect the axial movement of said follower, independently of the movement of said rod.
4. A hollow piston arranged to be reciprocated in a casing, and having a chamber provided with outlets, for containing lubricant, a'follower for said lubricant,` and means extended exterior to said casing arranged to reciprocate with said piston, rotatable to move said follower axially in said chamber.
5. A piston having a chamber provided with ports, a closure for said chamber movable with respect to the piston walls, and having` outlets communicating with said chamber, and arranged to register with said ports and adjustable to close said ports.
6. A piston having a chamber provided with ports, a closure for said chamber in threaded engagement with the piston walls, and having outlets communicating with said chamber and arranged to register with said ports, the relative rotation of. said closure and piston effecting closure of said ports.
7. A hollow piston comprising cylindrical walls having a threaded region, and a freesmooth marginal flange provided with ports, a stem engaged with said piston and extending exterior to said reservoir by which said piston may be reciprocated, a closure for said piston in threaded engagement with said threaded zone having a smooth region fitted snugly within the flange of the piston walls, and provided with outlets communicating with the chamber in said piston and arranged to register with said ports and to be rotated to control said ports, a follower in the chamber in said piston, a sleeve embracing said stem in threaded engagement with said follower' In witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of February, A. D., 1920.
