To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES HARVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check or Ticket Punches, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention is embodied in certain improvements hereinafter v described and claimed in a check or ticket punch of the type disclosed by the Farrow'Patent, No. 1,191,680, dated July 18, 1916. 1

The punch comprises a bifurcated endportion having a check-receiving throat 12,
I a female die 13, plunger-guiding means provided by; two orifices Hand 1,5,in alinement with. each other-and with the female die, a looped resilient handleportion includ ing a swinging arm 16, movable toward and from the bifurcated portion, and, provided at its swinging end with an open-ended slot 17,and,a plunger 18, guided by said guid ing means, and formed at its outer end to cooperate with the female die in punching a check inserted in the throat 12. The plunger is provided between its ends with diametrically opposite notches 19, formed in the perimeter of the plunger, without materially reducing the cross-sectional area thereof. The edges of the slot 17 loosely enter the notches 19, so that a loose connection is provided between the swinging arm 16 and the plunger, whereby swinging movements of the arm are caused to impart rectilinear movements to the plunger.

The preferred construction, whereby the improved loose connection and the guard hereinafter described, constituting another improvement, are provided, is as follows:
The swinging 'arml6 is a portion of' a resilient metal strip,'which includes a neck portion 21, and an outer arm portion 22, extending beside the swinging innerarm portion 16, the whole'forming 'a looped resilient handle, the compression and release of which cause swinging movementsof the arm 16. The arm 22 constitutes a member of the bifurcated portion of the punch, and the female die 13 is formed by boring an orifice in the said arm near its outere'nd.

Another portion of said bent extension'iorms a stop ear 27. adapted to limit the outward movement of the swinging arm 16. The guide orifice 15 is formed in'the stop ear The described parts may be conveniently assembled by first inserting the plunger in the guide orifices-Hand 15, then moving the elongated bent strip endwise to engage the edges of the slot 17 with the plunger notches 19, and locate the female die 13 in alinement with the guide orifices, and finally securing the supplemental strip and'the spacing strip to the arm 22 by the rivets 2 L It will be seen that the openended slot 17' and the plunger notches 19 enable the swinging arm 16 and the plunger to be conveniently interengaged duringthe assembling operation, the edges of the slot sliding into engagement with the notches.
The portion of the guard 26, which extends beside a portion of the inner side of the plunger, locates the stop ear 27 relatively near the cutting end of the plunger, and prevents the pinching; between the swinging arm 16 and the stop ear 27, of the fore finger of a hand grasping the handle, the of the arm 16 between the stop ear and the supplemental strip 23 beinginsufiicient to permit the interposition of a finger between the stop ear and the" suppl emental' strip.
I claim:
'1. A check punch comprising a bifurcated end portion having a check-receiving throat, a female die, and plunger-guiding means, a looped resilient handle portion, including a swinging arm movable toward and from the bifurcated portion, a plunger guided by said guiding means, formed at its outer end to. cooperate with said die, and provided with diametrically opposite notches in its perimeter, the said swinging arm having in its; free end an: open-ended slot whose edges loosely engage said notches, so that movements of the swinging arm impart rectilinear movements to the plunger.
2. A check punch coi-nprisinga'bifurcated end portion having a check-receiving throat, a female die, and plunger-guiding means, a looped resilient handleportion, including a swinging arm movable toward and from the bifurcated portion, a plunger guided by said guiding means ,'formed. at its outer end to cooperate with said die, and provided with diametrically opposite notchesin its perimeter, the said swinging arm having in its free end an open-ended slot whose edges loosely engage saidnotches,- and a bent extension on'one of the members of saidbifurcated portion forminga guard adapted as described to prevent injury to a finger en gaging the handle portion, and a stop ear adapted to limit the outward movement of the swinging arm, and constituting an'element of the plunger-guiding means.
3. A check punch comprising an elongated resilient strip, centrallyd'ient to form an outer and an inner arm, and a resilient handle portion carrying and permitting swinging movements of the inner arm, the outer arm being provided with a female die, and the inner armwith an open-ended slot, a supplemental strip rigidly attached to the outer arm and forming therewitlr a bifurcated portion having a check-receiving throat, said supplemental arm: having a bent extension provided with two plunger guides in alinement with each other and with the female die; and a plunger movable in said guides, formed to cooperate with the female die, and provided with diametrically opposite notches in its perimeter, loosely engaging the edges in said slot, said extension including a guard portion, adapted as de-l scribed to prevent injury to a finger engage ing the handle portion, a stop portion on ear, adapted tolimit the outward movement of the swinging arm, and constituting one of said plunger guides. v
