IMPRVEMENT IN WASHING MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,805, dated November 18, 1873; application filed J une 7, 1873.

To all whom it rmay concern:

Beit known that I, J oHN TRICKETT, ofthe city of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciiication.

This invention has relation to washing-machines designed to be applied to ordinary wash-tubs; and consists in the construction and arrangement of the frame, springs to bear on the journals of the main roller, and devices for guiding the articles to be washed to their proper places, and prevent them from being drawn down between small fluted rollers, all as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view.

A represents an ordinary wash-tub 5 and B B', the sides of the washing-machine, of different lengths, to allow the machine to be arranged to one side of the tub, and leave room at the other side to obtain access to the lower part of the tub. The side pieces are shaped to fit inside the tub, with projections at the ends to rest on its edges. B' represents the main roller, grooved or fluted longitudinally, and provided with a shaft, the ends of which rest in slots in the side pieces, allowing nthe roller to adapt itself to the bulk of clothing between it and the lower rollers, e, which are small, and grooved or iluted, as shown. The main roller is operated by means of a crank, E, and is held in place by the wooden springs F, pivoted to the side pieces B, and held down upon the shaft of the rollers by straps H buttoned to the side of the tub, and capable of being released, so that the springs may be raised and the roller removed, when required. The small rollers are operated by friction from the large roller, the former being journaled to the side pieces B. Gr designates transverse guides, to cause the clothes to pass between the large and small rollers, and to prevent A them from being drawn down between the latter. These guides are of rounded form, and

have concavities in their inner sides, so that they may be placed close to the small rollers, as shown.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- .Ihe combination of the pivote-d bars or springs F, side pieces B, straps H, self-adjusting iluted roller B', crank E, small uted rollers e, and transverse guides G, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
