UNITED STATES PATENT OEETOE.
JAMES OLIVER, OE SOUTH BEND, 'INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,785, dated November 18, 1873 application led september 2o, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES OLIVER, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of plOws which have a colter extending upward from the plow-point 5 and it consists in the construction ofthe standard and mold-board,bringin g the same forward to the proper thickness to meet and form a rest for the back of the upright colter-point against the mold-board, and at the same time maintaining a true line or circle on the working-surface of both the moldboard and colter-point.
In Order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and Operation, referring' to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of a plow embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plow-standard.
A represents an ordinary plowbeam, to C is the plow-point, with upward-projecting colter D. E is the land-side, and G the mold-board, of the plow. The mold-board thus extended is formed to conform with the circle and furrowline or working-surface of the cOlter-point, and leaves or forms an unbroken surface from the front edge of the colter to the heel of the mold-board. By this means the clogging and sticking behind the oolter-point are Obviated, strength is added to the colter, and an easier and more natural turning mold-board is formed. The curvature of the mold-board and colter is such that, in grinding and polishing, the grindstone lits perfectly over all the surface. J represents the jointer attached to the plow-beam A above the point of the plow, and which is so constructed as to conform with the same curve as the mold-board and colter,'and on the same principle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe standard B, extended forward, as shown at a, the mold-board and land-side extending forward even with the standard, forming a uniform curve, whichforms a seat for the colter D, the part C being supported by the enlarged foot of the standard, as and for' the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES OLIVER.
Witnesses z GEO. PFLEGEE, W. G. GEORGE.
