CHARLES L. EADES, MUTUAL, OKLAHOMA.
COW HOPPLE.
Application filed July 15, 1920. Serial No. 396,400.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. EADns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mutual, in the county of Woodward and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cow Hopples; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cow hopples of the type having leg engaging elements or hooks and has for its primary object the provision of a lever and link connection between said elements that will permit a considerable leverage to be obtained for drawing and holding the legs of a cow together and which will prevent the cow from kicking with either le Another object of this invention is the provision of a cow hopple of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable, and eflicient, and whichmay be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost. With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating a hopple constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to a cow,
Figure 2 is a plan view illustrating a hopple in an open position,
Figure 3 is a similar View with the hopple in a closed position,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numerals 1 and 2 indicat leg engaging elements or hooks that are adapted to be aplied to the cows hind legs as illustrated in igure 1 and each element consists of a shank 3 having one end bent to form a hook 4 to receive the cows leg and its other end bent to form an eye 5. The eye 5 of the leg engaging element 1 has pivotal connection with a link 6 that has its other end pivoted to one end of a lever 7.
The lever 7 consists of a handle portion 8 that has formed on one end a curved portion 9 that is extended to form an arm 10. The end of the arm 10 and the end of the link 6 are pivotally connected as illustrated at 11. A link 12 is pivoted to the arm 10 at its point of formation with the curved end 9 of the lever and has an opening 13 in its other end to which a flexible element or chain 14 is connected. The other end of the chain or flexible element 14: is extended through the eye in the leg engaging element 2, thus it will be seen that the leg engaging elements are capable of being positioned a considerable distance apart so that they can be readily and quickly applied to the legs of a cow, and on swinging the handle portion 8 of the lever 7 in parallel relation to the shank 3 of the leg engaging element 1, said leg engaging elements will be moved into close proximity to each other drawing the legs of the cow close together and holding them against any action of kicking. The handle 8 is offset as illustrated at 16 to form a hand grip and a keeper 17 is secured to the shank 3 of the leg engaging element 1 and is adapted to receive the handle 8 adj acent the offset portion 6 and be retained therein by means of a pivoted element 18 carried bv the keeper 17, thus firmly locking the device on the legs of a cow.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed is A hopple comprising leg engaging elements each consisting in a shank having one end inwardly curved and its other end provided with a leg engaging hook a link bar pivoted at one end to the curved end of one of said leg engaging elements, chain links connected to th curved end of the other leg engaging element, a link bar connected at one of the leg elements for engagement with 10 one end to the chain link, a lever having anthe said other straight portion of said lever. gularly related straight portions and an in- In testimony whereof I afix my signature termeiliate curved portion, one of the in presence of two witnesses.
