N. C. SIMONSEN- HQPPLE FOR cow sv Filed Aug. 13, 1924 N C. lhwnsen Patented Nov. 18, 1924.
NITED STATES NIELS C. SIMONSEN, OF SIOUX RAPIDS, IOWA.
HOPPLE FOR COWS.
Application filed August 13, 1924. Serial No. 731,798.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIELS C. SiMoNsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux Rapids, in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Hopple for Cows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hopples and aims to provide a novel form of hopple especially designed for use in connection with cows, means being provided and forming a partof the hopple for engaging the tail of the cow to hold the same while being milked.
An important object of the invention is to provide means to facilitate the applying of the hopple, means being provided for securing the chain in various positions of adjustnient.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing fro-m the spiritof the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view disclosing a hopple constructed in accordance with the invention as positioned in its operative position.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the hopple as applied to the legs of a cow.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of one of the clamping members.
Figure 4 is a side elevational 'VlGW disclosing the opposite side of the clamping memher and the chain securing member.
Figure 5 shows a modified manner of securing the chain.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device embodies a pair of clamping members 5 and 6 respectively, which clamping mem bers are formed of lengths of spring metal formed into hooks of constructions to fit over the animals legs at points above the hooks thereof. The constructions of the hooks include central cut out portions 5 providing spaced tongues 6 so that the hooks will securely grip the animals legs to secure the clamps in position in a manner to insure against slipping of the clamps.
As clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing, the clamp 6 is provided with a laterally extended tongue 7 formed integral therewith, and under which the animals tail may be positioned to secure the animals tail against movement to prevent the animal from switching its tail while being milked.
Each clamping member is formed with an outwardly turned portion 8 providing eyes, and as shown by Figure 2, the eye 8 of the hook member 5 accommodates one end link of the chain 9, while the eye 8 of the clamp 6 receives the fastening member 10 which is in the form of a link having a cut out portion 11 providing a tongue 12 which extends laterally therefrom.
On securing the chain and clamps, the chain 9 is passed through the cut out portion 11 of the link 10 in such a way that the links of the chain will set up a binding action between the member 10 and underside of tongue 12.
If it is desired, one of the links of the chain 9 may be positioned over the tongue 12 in a manner as illustrated by Figure 5 to absolutely lock the chain against movement.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the chain may be readily adjusted for various usages, and the ends of the chain secured to prevent accidental displacement of the chain with respect to the hook members.
In View of the foregoing detail description, a further detail description as to the operation of the device is believed unnecessary.
I claim 2- A hopple including clamping members, a link pivotally connected with one of the clamping members, said link having a tongue stamped therefrom to provide an opening, a securing chain having one end thereof secured to one of the clamping members, the opposite end of the chain adapted to be passed through the opening, and said tongue adapted to extend through one of the links of the chains to lock the chain against movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
NIELS C. SIMONSEN.
WVitnesses CHARLES E. PENDLETON, FLoYn M. INGRAM.
