To all whom it may coitce'm: 1 f. i
Be it known that I, GJORUP Pnnnnsnn, A a subject of the King, of Denmark, residing at Massillon, inthe county of Stark and State of hio,`have invented newand usefnl Improvements infPoolet Umbrellas, of-
which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to: folding umbrellas, and more particularly to what I term a pocket umbrella." l .i
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide an umbrella of. comparatively simple constructionV4 and operation which may be folded or collapsed so as to occupy a container of such size as to be carried in thepocket. A further Objectis to provide an umbrella having' Asimple and eliicient means ,for holding, the sainel extended,A this means {alsoassisting 4in folding or collapsing of the umbrella. Furthery objects will erating sectiomthe'se grooves and lugs servinsr to hold the sections ofthe rod against relative turning movement. kSections 1, 2 and 3 are each provided with a spring catch 7. The sections of the rodare further provided with openings which, when *the rod is extended, are alinedgtoreceivethe outer end `portions of the-free arms of catches 7 `these catches rthus serving to lock the' sections of the rod infextended relation. By forcing the catches inwardlythe rod "sections may be released thus permitting the rod to be telescoped" as in Figure 2.
An upper sleeve 8 is mounted about sec tion 4 of the-umbrella rod and is provided at its lower end with an outwardly projecting ange 9 which lits beneath ring 10 at the upper end of a lower sleeve 11 which ts about section 3 of the umbrella rod. Sleeve such a small space asto-be readily `placedin rod formed" of.
of catch` 7 carried by section 3 of the rod, this catch serving to loc- k sections 3 and 4 and sleeve 8 together. A catch 13 is carried by sleeve` 11 adjacent to the upper end thereof and lits into an opening through section 3, when the umbrella is extended, so as to loclcsleeve 11 against upward movement on sleeve 8. l
A head14 is secured in theupper end of section 4 and co-operates with a head plate" 15 secured in the upper end of section 4 to secure the fabric covering for the ribs of the umbrella, this coveringbeing omitted in the drawings for clearness. This `head is provided in its inner face with an annular space 14a adapted for reception of an eXpansion coil spring` 16 mounted about section 4v and confined between head 14 and a collar 17 atxthe upper end of sleeve 8. `Head 14, collar 17 and ring 10 are all slotted in a lrnownmanner to receive the inner end portionsof the ribs ofthe umbrella structure, these ribs being secured in the slots by wires `passed through ,the` ends of the ribs, or in Aany'other suitable or preferred manner.
The rib structure for supporting the fab-` ric topor covering :ofthe umbrella Consists rota suitable'number of units 18.4 Each of these unitsin'cludes a main top'rib consisting of sections 19, 20 and 21. Section 19 is.
,secured at its inner end in head 14 and is pivoted, at its outer end, at 22 to theinner .end of section 20 the outer end of which is connected by a link 23 to the inner end `of section 21. An upper brace 4rib 24 has its inner end secured in collar 17 and is piv oted at its outer end,fat 22, to sections 19 and 20.` A lowerbrace rib 25 extends from ring 10 to outer section 21 ofthe top rib,
and, at its outer ends by la clip 32 to section `28. As will be noted from Figure 1, the
clips project below rib 25 so that the spring is positioned beneath the axis of connection 27 when the umbrella is extended and servesl to hold sections 26 and 28 in alinement, the
vknuckle joint 27 positively limiting downward movement of section 28 beyond horizontal position. A truss brace rib 33 is conlthis lower` brace rib including an innern
