Application med May 4, 1920. serial'No. 378,745.
To all 'whom it may concern.' u K Be it known that. l, KURT ``WANDEL, a citizen of Wurttemberg, whe have declared my intention/of becoming a' citizen k,of the United States, and resident of New York city, county of New lYorkystate of New York, have invented' an Improvement in Paper-Crinkling Mechanism, of which `the, following description, ink connection with the accompanying drawings, is'a specication2 like characters von the drawings representlng like parts in each of thev several vlews. l
This invention relates to the crinkling of ypaper to render the same' stretchable and more particularly to paper crinkling mecha+ nism employing air pressure to cause the paper to adhere to the crinkling drum for engagement and clearance therefrom by 'a' doctor or abutment which causesk the crinkling in the paper. In accordance with' a practice recently developed `by me, this air pressure is atmospheric'pressure which is made available by the use of a suction device associated with the crinkling drum. In a preferred form of apparatus: of this kind the crinkling druml is grcoved circumferentially at intervals throughout its op'- erative length providing a Aseries. of continuous paper supporting areas which alternate with such grooves and with such groovesconstituting suction areas to hold the .paper continuously adherent to the drum. I have found' that in the usek of air suction means to cause adherence of the paper to `the crinkling drum, most satisfactory and `eective results are obtained by having the suction eii'ect'gradually in-k of the drum and to permitthis the paper" web is caused to engage the drum at a substantial angular distance in advance of the doctor. A gradually increasing suction ef` fect of this character may be provided by a suction device in the form of a suction box interior of the drum, or it may be provided by suction connections located entirely exterior [of the drum and `I show herein forms of theinvention employing both of these constructions.l rlkhe 'foregolthey doctor. l multiple perforations therethrough estab-y ing and other objects and advantages of the Figfl is a.l plan view showing acrinkling drum with a doctor associated therewith and embodying one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic vertical section "longitudinal of the direction of the paper movement illustrating the `form of theinvention of Fig. l; f
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing a crinkling I drum and doctor with the invention embodied in another form; and v ,'Fig. tis a vertical section showing the torni of the invention of Fig. 3. Referringfirst to Figs'. l and 2, 10 indicates a crinkling drum` which may be equipped with smooth journal portions l0a at its ends, this drum being mounted and driven in any suitable manner (not shown).
The peripheral surface of this drum is formedv with a series of circumferential grooves 11 which alternatewith continuous fpaper supporting areas 12. A doctor or clearer abutment 13 is stationarily mountlfit: closely and continuously the gro'oved periphery of the `drum along the line of operative engagement. In this-form of the invention the drum is formed as a hollow shell andI has mounted 'therewithin a suction box 15 having its forward'edge in proximity to The drum is formed with lishingcommunication from the grooves 11 to the suction box in the portions of such grooves vthat are over the suction box. The suction box 15 is connectedl throughpiping 17 with a suitable source lof air suction which may be an ordinary suctionpump or blower. In accordance with my yinvention a suitable packing member 18, which may be a block o wood, extends from the back of the suction box rearwardly a substantial angular distance in the direction from which the paper is being drawn, this packing'block closing the holes 16 of the drum in the tinctive .features of novelty will be there- 'after pointed out in the `appended claims. Referring 'to the drawings:
led for cooperation with this' drum and is 25 Itect trema-maximum iat theareapver the proximity of `the suction box. The paper web W isshownasdrawngifroin a roll B, the direction in which the web is guided being such that the web engages the crinl lingl a substantiall distance back ot the doctor, i. e; approximately the same packing block 18. With this arrangement a maximum of suction lWill.beexerted upon the paper in the immediate proximity or .the doctor, ,it being noted that thek suction suction.
.box-flfitself is lof relatively small angular extent, and that the `close .fitting or' jthe ,doctoriwitli the drum prevents any material loss of the .suctionrv effect on .theorward side of the suctionpbox. .Since the grooves 11-1however are opened rearwardly, iair is v permittedfhto enter these groovesback. of thegpoint where the paper engages the drum but not before'by reason of the cooperation ofthe packing block. ,18. andthe paper 4web applied :to fthe drum :peripheryw By reason of. this relieving of the suction; back` of rthe point where the web engages the drum, there .will be ialgradually decreasing suction efsiiction'box to afminiiniimwhere the paper .first engages .the druin ,and 1 have'ound this to be important k.and .essential orthe it to :thedoctor for the requisite andinost effective crinkling effect.y .The provision of sucha suction bog; with adequatepacking and the perforated drum, presentcertain structural diiiicultiesthat add tothe expense offmalringfthe, same in .a satisactorymam .ner .andl 1 have therefore devised means v'vherebyy a lilrexsuction effect progressively increasing to the crinlrling point may be obtained by .a .siietiondevice wholly vexternal of the drum`. Such -aconstruction vis shown in` Figs ande wherein a crinlrling drum 100 similar to that already described and .similarly grooved is provided eXceptfhowever that Jthis drumis not perforated, and
need notnecessarily even be hollow. The
doctor 130 associated with this .drum` is formedwith teeth or projections 140 entering the grooves 110 oi' the drum which alternate with the paper supporting areas 120. In kthis case however theprojections .140 do not closely. iit said grooves, i. e.` they donot extend entirely to the bottoms of the grooves. .In advance of this doctor I mount a-suctionboi; 131 the forward edge oi which is formed tofit the drum periphery as indicated at 132 and preferably with suitable .packngtoprevent the escape of the suction.
This suction box has piping 133 connected 'therewith leadingto a suitable source of air The paper web 1N in this case is led to the crinliling drum so that it engages Vthe saine yat asubstantial angular distance back or" the crinkling point in like manner as already described. With this construction theisution jei'ectyof thesuction box will be transmitted past the doctor by reason of the clearance between the projections or'l the doctor andv the groovesof the Vdrum and "this suction eect: will be' at its maxidistance back as the angulareirtent of the inuin directly in proximity to the doctor and gradually vdecreasing baclrwardly on the drum owing to the loss of suction as air 'isdrawn into the grooves back of the point where the paperengagesthedrum, Inbotli of thek describedV ormsfthe paper web is first drawneasily and. gently into adherence with the. drlllliby a relatively light suction and is c a.used to adhere morel strongly 'and securely V tothedrum as it moves forward to the crinklingpoint andso. thatasit reaches `the dector `it iS` strongly-and uniformly'. ad-

Claims Vrather than-to' the/.foregoing description to indicateI ythe jscope of 'tliein- ,vention y f1 .i I .Having described my linvention,w h at I Ldesire .tolem ,esnew and desire .to secure .by Letters Patent is:
1. vPlpiecrinkling mechanism comprising lafcrinkling drum and .doctor V cooperative therewith, and nieansi'or causing adherence of the paper totheldrumbyairpressure, said rineans constructed and arranged to cause v a maximum-air pressure reilect in `proximity to the crinlaling peint, and
gradually `decreasing backward therefrom. 2. Papercr-inlrling mechanism comprising a crinkling drum and doctor ,cooperative vtherewith,,and means for causing aprogressii/ely increasing-air suction effect upofnthe paper 4as it approaches the drum to cause adherence of thepaper lto theV drum for .crinlling which the paper is drawn.
4., Paper crinlrling apparatus lcomprising a crinkling drum and doctor cooperative therewitli,and means for causingadherence of the paper to thedrum bysuction as it is rpresented to ,the doctor, said means constructed and arranged to provide a maximum of suction effect in `proximity to the doctor and with provision'forrelievingthe suction at a point relatively remote angu larly therefrom in the direction from which the paper is drawn for the purpose stated.
5. Paper crinkling apparatus comprising a crinkling drum and doctor cooperative therewith, and a suction box mounted in terior of the drum in proximity to said doctor, said drum having perforations therethrough to connect with said suction box and a packing extending angularly in terior of the drum backward from said su@` tion box to close certain of such perforar tions.
6. Paper crinkling apparatus comprising a crinkling drum having its operative surface formed with a series of ciroumerentiat groovesalternating with continuous pape' supporting areas, a doctor mounted to ce operate with said drum, and means for prof. ducingy a suction elfect in said grooves of a maximum degree in l proximity to the crinkling point and gradually decreasing backward therefrom.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
