MAIL CARRIER.
ates, residing Uat of Boyd and Sta-te of febraslra, have nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail Carriers, ofl
which the following is a specifioation.
This invention has for its object the promexpensive and efiiclent delivery postmen may vision of a. simple, device whcreby rural be enabled to carry aflarge bundle of mail in a compact form and may readily withdraw from the bundle one or of mail matter for delivery to an addfessee.
The invention seeks to provide a device which may be readily adjusted t-o the quantity of mail to be carried and which wili be light and easily manipulated and which, when not in use, may be folded into compact form so as to beplaced in out of the way.
a small compass One embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanymg drawings, in
which Figure 1 is a proved device;
Fig. 2 is an edge view perspective view of the imthe same, F ig. 1
showing the device arranged to receive mail matter and Fig. 2 storage or transportation;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vation.
showing it folded for detal sectional ele- Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the latch.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a pair of standards 1 he of wood and Will gular cross section.
ends of these posts or a bolt or rod 2 which for hinges 3, the said leaves secured to base device is ter, the
which may conveniently preferably be of rectan- Through the lower standards 1. I insert constitutes the pintle hinges having their plates 4. VVhen the set up for use to receive mail matplates 4 are extended in horizontal alinement, as shown in Fig. 1 and the mail is placed upon the plates between the standards 1. When the device is not to the plates 4; may be easily folded be used, toward each other, as shown in Fig. 2, so that an economy of space will be efiected. in holding the standards 1 in an position when mail matter between the same, I provide To aid upright is being placed a spring 5 having its opposite end's secured to one of the standards and one of the tively, as shown in Fig. 1.
force of the springv Sldably mountedupon the standards 1 is an inverted U-,shaped frame which may conveniently be formed of metal of a U-shaped cross section, the legs 6 fitting slidably over the standards 1 and the arched member7 connecting the upper ends of the legs Constituting a handle whereby the device may be easily handled, as will be readily understood. The inner web or back of the upper U-shaped member is constructed with longitudinal slots 8 adapted to receive the ends of a bolt 9 fitted in the upper ends of the standard l, and nuts 10 mounted on the said bolt are turned home against the web of theV frame so as to secure the upper inverted U-'shaped member at any desired height relative to the standards. I am thus enabled to very easily and quickly adjust the height of the frame to the quantity of mail matter which is tofbe placed 'thereiu Across the outer open side of the upper frame, I Secure spaced pins or rivets 11 which are adapted to be engaged by springcontrolled latches 12 mounted on the ends of a follower 13 which is adapted to bear upon the top of the bundle of letters or packages placed .in the device. This follower preferably is an open rectangular frame fitted loosely around the upper frame of the device so as to move freely vertically thereon. On the under side of the follower at the opposite sides of the upper frame, l provide rollers 14 which are adap'ted to bear upon the bundle of mail matter so that, while the said matter will be effectually held to the base plates 4, the top piece or any intermediate piece may be readily withdrawn without requiring the pressure upon the bundle to be relieved. It will be readily understood that after the bundle of letters or packages has been placed upon the base plate 4 between the standards and the upper adjustable frame of the device, the follower is pushed manually down onto the bundle so that the rollers 14 will rest therevlt) , risino' a. Jair of standards i V V 7: 7
from the upper adjustahle frame.
on. Theilatches 12 Will ride readiy over the pins or'rivets 11 during the' doWnWa-rd movement of the follower and Will engage under the respectivepins or -latches respectively, as shownn Fg. 3, so that, When the desired pressure has been placed upon -the bundle, follower Will vbe prevented and the mail will be securely held. If it be desired to remove 4 the fo11oWe'r, the latches lzinay be easily released inan obvious manner so-as to peri mit the follower to be raised` the free upward movelnent of thel from,
through the iower endsgof said standards, hinges carried' by saidbolt, base plates disposed at opposite sdes of the said bolt and secured to said ahinges, and a follower supported on the standards.
2. -A device for the purpose set forth comprising a base p1ate,,standards rising therelegs fitted to and embracing 'said standards and having open outer sides and ,longitudinally slotted inner sides,' spaced stops extending across vthe outer open sides of the said le'gs', securng devices carried by the standards and passng through the longitudinallyslotted inner sides of thev legs, a foliower mounted upon thefsaid lege and extending between the same, and latehes mounted on the ends of theV follower and adapted to el'igage the said s'tops in the outer open sides of the legs.
