UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS W. HARPER, OF PHILIPSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPOOL-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,762, dated November 18, 1873; application filed September 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, A. W. HARPER, of Philipsburg, in the county of Center and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Spool- Cases and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in revolving cases for holding spools of silk or cotton thread; and it consists in a number of tubes of diiferent sizes, open at the top so as to insert the spools, and having a suitable opening at the bottom through the side so as to remove them. Each tube is numbered, so as to indicate at a glance what quality of thread it contains, and are all secured to two circular plates, which are hung upon pivots, so as to be freely revolved around, so as to bring any one tube opposite a'givcn point,
all of which ill be more fully described hereafter.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention taken on the line w .r, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
a represents a number of tubes of different sizes and any desired length, which are se cured around the outer edges of the two circular plates 0, which revolve freely around on the pivots e. These tubes vary in size, so as to receive the largest and smallest spools that are made, and are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the spools, so as to indicate at a glance what' quality of cotton or silk they contain. The lower ends of the tubes have sharp points formed upon their lower ends, which stick into the lower plate 0, and hold the ends in position, while the upper ones are secured against the recessed edge of the upper plate by the bands 9, which passes around them; but the manner of fastening the tubes in position is immaterial, and may be done by any other devices which may be preferred. Each one of the tubes is open at the top, so that it can be freely filled with spools, While at thebottom through the side is made an opening, i, through which the lower spool can be taken out. The shorter and smaller tubes are placed upon the outside, and have the opening in their sides made just above their hottoms o, which prevent the spools from falling out; but in the larger and inner tubes the bottoms are removed entirely, and the lower spools rest upon the top of the plate 0. Over these tubes is placed a cap or cover, I, which entirely incloses the tubes, and which has an opening, d, through its top, through which the tubes are filled with spools, and a door, 1), upon one side, through which the spools are taken out.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A revolving spool-case, consisting of a series of tubes of dilferent sizes and lengths, all provided with openings i, and the shorter ones with bottoms 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A spool-case with theseries of tubes at ofdifferent sizes and lengths, and fitted in a revolving frame, incombination with the case l with doors I) d, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. AMOS W. HARPER.
Witnesses:
